Memphis Redbirds News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Memphis Redbirds rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning for a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Thursday night at Principal Park.
Memphis (64-69) has won four straight and stay within two games behind Omaha in the PCL American Northern Division with 11 games to play. It was the club's 13th last at-bat victory and only the second win when trailing after eight innings this season.
Shortstop Greg Garcia hit a leadoff double in the ninth and scored the tying run on a Travis Tartamella RBI single to right. Pinch hitter Chad Huffman followed with a sacrifice fly to score Justin Christian, who previously reached on a walk.
First baseman Brock Peterson doubled while recording his team-leading 37th multi-hit game. Garcia and Mike O'Neill also added two hits.
Iowa's Brad Nelson went a perfect 4-for-4 with four singles, but failed to drive in or score a run from the cleanup spot.
Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 advantage as O'Neill began the contest with a line drive single to center. The leadoff hitter moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on an infield groundout, and scored as Peterson recorded his team-leading 80th RBI with a single to left. The Redbirds added their second run in the fourth as Garcia singled and scored as Christian grounded into a double play.
Boone Whiting retired nine of first 10 in the game and faced the minimum entering the fourth inning until Dave Sappelt hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall to cut the lead in half. The Cubs tied the game in the next frame on a Tim Torres RBI single.
Three consecutive singles against Keith Butler gave Iowa a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth.
Both starting pitchers tossed quality starts and earned no-decisions. Whiting yielded two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Iowa's Justin Grimm surrendered a pair of runs on seven hits in six innings.
Butler worked two innings for the victory. Fernando Salas worked around a walk for a scoreless ninth to convert his 12th save.
The two teams continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Friday evening at Principal Park. Right-hander Carlos Martinez (5-3, 2.66) will face Iowa right-hander Kyle Hendricks (1-0, 3.32).
