Red Wings Hold Off Indians 3-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Right-hander Kevin Mulvey allowed just two runs over 6.2 innings and second baseman Trevor Plouffe scored and drove in a run as Rochester went on to defeat Indianapolis 3-2 in front of 9,914 Friday night at Frontier Field

The Red Wings improve to 59-63 on the season and 36-23 at home, while the Indians fall to 56-65 overall and 26-33 on the road. The win gives Rochester a 3-2 series advantage after the two teams split their four game series earlier this season at Victory Field.

Mulvey (6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO) struck out seven on the way to his fifth victory of the season. The 23-year-old hurler , who came over from the New York Mets organization as part of the Johan Santana trade, improves to 5-8 on the campaign.

Plouffe sparked the offense for the Red Wings, doubling with two outs in the second inning and coming around to score on a single by C Jeff Christy. The 22-year-old then gave Rochester the lead again in the fourth inning, when his second double of the contest plated 3B Luke Hughes.

1B Garrett Jones put the Red Wings ahead for good in the fifth inning, with an RBI base knock that scored CF Jason Pridie, who led-off the inning with a single.

Rochester LHP Ricky Barrett (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) picked up his fifth hold of the season, while RHP Bobby Korecky (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) notched his 20th save of the season.

Plouffe (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI), Pridie (2-for-4, 1 R), DH Alejandro Machado (2-for-4) and Jones (3-for-4, 1 RBI) all turned in multi-hit performances for the Red Wings.

The Tribe plated both their runs on solo long balls in the first and fifth.

LF Nyjer Morgan blasted his first home run of the season to lead-off the game, while RF Matt Kata connected for the eighth time this season in the fifth.

The home run was the first for Morgan since Sept. 25, 2007, when he connected off the Arizona Diamondbacks during his time with Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old is now batting .444 (12-for-27) with 10 runs and nine RBI over his last seven games.

Indians RHP Evan Meek (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to lower his ERA to 0.94 (3 ER in 28.2 IP) over his last 14 appearances.

Tribe starter Ross Ohlendorf (6.0 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) took the loss to drop to 2-3 on the season.

Morgan (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI), Kata (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) and SS Luis Cruz (2-for-3) all collected multiple hits for the Indians.

The teams continue their four-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Anthony Swarzak is scheduled to start for Rochester, while RHP Jimmy Barthmaier is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
