Bats Sink Clippers With Historic 7-1 Victory

August 8, 2008 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

Louisville, KY - Despite a season-high four errors, the Bats continue making history this season as they scored seven unanswered runs to defeat the Columbus Clippers, 7-1. 11,330 fans witnessed the Bats reached 25 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history. The Bats are also on a season-high eight-game winning streak.

Runs were hard to come by early as both starting pitchers were sharp. Matt Maloney (9-4, 4.19) did not factor in the decision but had an impressive outing in his first game back from the DL. In five strong innings of work he recorded seven strikeouts, surrendered five hits on 76 pitches. Maloney only gave up his only run when Ed Rogers laced a double to left field, scoring Larry Broadway in the fourth inning to put Columbus up 1-0.

Marco Estrada (3-2, 3.94) was just as strong in a losing effort. He dialed up seven strikeouts of his own and held the Bats scoreless for five innings. Louisville's offense finally got to Estrada in the sixth, producing two runs. With one out, the Bats loaded the bases, thanks to a Luis Jiminez fielding error in left field. Paul Janish then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Drew Anderson to tie the game. A Kevin Barker sacrifice fly scored Shaun Cumberland to make the score 2-1.

Louisville added two more runs in the seventh as Adam Rosales showed no signs of cooling off with 384-foot solo homer to put Louisville up two runs. Later in the inning, Ryan Hanigan hit a RBI double to right to extend the Bats lead to 4-1.

In the eighth the Bats added three insurance runs. Rosales began the scoring when he ripped a RBI double, which capped another spectacular performance for the 25-year-old. He finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and two runs batted in.

Bats reliever Carlos Fischer (4-0, 1.04) picked up the win working one scoreless inning. He recorded his fourth win in only his seventh appearance.

Louisville and Columbus will meet again Saturday evening at 6:15 in the second of a four-game series. Bats will throw LHP Adam Pettyjohn (12-4, 4.41) to against Clippers RHP Craig Stammen (0-2, 12.51).
