Chicago Stars FC News Release
Chicago, IL (August 12, 2014) - The Red Stars have a simple mission for their last two regular season games: win and you're in. If the Red Stars can secure two wins this week, they will be guaranteed one of the top four slots to make the NWSL post-season. First up is the Boston Breakers on Wednesday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m. CT, as the Red Stars celebrate Military Appreciation Night presented by Army National Guard.
The Red Stars (8-7-7, 31pts) put in one of their best performances of the season in a 2-1 victory over playoff-bound FC Kansas City this past Saturday. Red Stars forward Melissa Tancredi set the tone with an early goal in the 9th minute of play. Forward Christen Press gave the Red Stars the game-winner off of an assist from defender Taryn Hemmings in the 40th minute.
The Boston Breakers (5-15-2, 17pts) are coming off a huge victory against Portland Thorns FC on Sunday. The Breakers were able to pull off a 2-0 shutout against the visitors, as goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher earned NWSL Player of the Week honors for her efforts. Breakers defender Rachel Wood opened the scoring with her first professional goal in the 14th minute of the match. Midfielder Heather O'Reilly scored for the Breakers off an assist from midfielder Lianne Sanderson in the 28th minute of play. The Breakers victory was actually crucial for the Red Stars as it helps keep them in contention with the Thorns for a playoff spot.
The Red Stars currently sit in 5th place in the standings, but just 2 points behind Portland and 4 points behind Washington, both teams they have a game in hand on. If the Red Stars win these final two matches they'll earn a chance to face FC Kansas City on August 23 or the Seattle Reign FC on August 24 in the NWSL semifinals.
