
Red Sox Select Tommy Layne to Active Roster

The Boston Red Sox today selected left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned him to Pawtucket. He was then recalled as the club's 26thman on the active roster for the second game of today's day-night doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park beginning at 7:15 p.m.Layne will wear No. 59.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
This is the first major league stint of the season for Layne, 29, who is 5-1 with six saves and a 1.51 ERA (7 ER) in 30 appearances this season, all in relief for Pawtucket. He has fanned 46 batters in 41.2 innings, allowing just 25 hits and 18 walks, and has not allowed a run in 9.2 innings over his last nine outings, going 1-0 with all six saves in that time. The left-hander leads the team in appearances, innings, and saves, ranks second in wins, and tops club relievers in ERA and strikeouts. He ranks fourth among International League relief qualifiers in opponent batting average (.174) and fewest base runners per nine innings (10.1). Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in November 2013, he is 2-2 with two saves, a 2.84 ERA, 31 strikeouts, and 19 hits allowed in 25.1 innings over 40 major league games, all out of the San Diego Padres' bullpen from 2012-13.
Under Major League Baseball Rules, teams are permitted to add an extra player for the second game of doubleheaders played within one day of the original postponement.With this move, the Red Sox' 40-man roster is now at 40.
