Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

(Columbus, OH) - Elliot Johnson slugged a two-run home run and Audy Ciriaco lined a two-run double to highlight a four-run fifth inning and the Columbus Clippers held off a late rally to outlast the Pawtucket Red Sox, 5-4, Sunday night at Huntington Park in the opener of a four-game series.

Mike Carp, playing in his seventh game of a Major League injury rehab assignment, played the entire game in left field for a second-consecutive night and went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the ninth, a double and a walk. Carp, on the disabled list since June 2nd with a broken bone in his right foot, is now 5-for-21 during his rehab stint but is 4-for-8 with three RBI the past two nights.

PawSox starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa was pulled after only one scoreless inning of work in what appeared to be a planned move. There did not appear to be any injury to De La Rosa. Pawtucket (46-46) has now lost five of its last six following a six-game winning streak, although the past four losses have all come by one run.

Carp's RBI hit and a throwing error on the shortstop Ciriaco against Mark Lowe in the ninth brought the PawSox within one run and left the tying run on first base with two outs. Lowe, however, got Carlos Rivero to line out to short to finish the game and give Columbus a seventh victory in its last nine games.

Chris Hernandez (4-7) relieved De La Rosa to start the second inning and worked three strong frames to begin his night, and the lefty held a 2-1 lead into the fifth. Hernandez struggled in that fifth, however, allowing three hits and two walks and four earned runs in the decisive inning of the contest.

Zach McAllister (5-0) started for Columbus and allowed a pair of two-out runs in the fourth on consecutive RBI singles by Garin Cecchini and Deven Marrero. McAllister settled down after and worked his way through six full innings, giving up a total of eight hits and two runs with five strikeouts.

Frank Herrmann (seventh inning), Bryan Price (eighth) got the ball to Lowe with scoreless relief work. Despite allowing two runs (one earned), Lowe recorded his 12th save of the season. Marrero and Ryan Roberts paced Pawtucket's 12-hit attack by each going 3-for-4 in the game.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Monday night with first pitch at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Matt Barnes (3-6, 4.85) is slated to start for the PawSox against Columbus righty Kyle Davies (4-6, 3.92). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.

Following the ten-game road trip and the subsequent Triple-A All-Star break, the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a four game series against Buffalo that begins on Thursday, July 17th. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
