Laffey, Chiefs Stifle G-Braves, 6-1

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Syracuse starter Aaron Laffey stifled the Gwinnett Braves (42-48) en route to his International League leading 11th win of the season, sending the Chiefs (53-36) to a 6-1 win on Sunday night at Coolray Field.

Laffey (W, 11-3) went 7.0 innings, scattering three hits and allowing one earned run in the contest. The left-hander won his sixth straight game, as he hasn't lost since May 28.

Gwinnett jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning against Laffey. Todd Cunningham doubled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Phil Gosselin and scored on an RBI groundout by Tyler Pastornicky.

After tossing a scoreless frame in the first, Daniel Rodriguez hit a snag in the top of the second. The left-hander walked three, gave up three hits and allowed five runs. Rodriguez served up back-to-back singles to Destin Hood and Sandy Leon before he walked the next two batters. A four-pitch walk to Laffey pushed across the first Chiefs' run, and Zach Walters drew another bases-loaded walk to make it 2-1. Steven Souza, Jr. then cleared the bases with a double to left field, making it 5-1.

Rodriguez (L, 4-11) was removed with two outs in the second inning after allowing five runs on three hits and four walks. He went a season-low 1.2 innings as his losing streak reached eight games.

Right-hander Kanekoa Texeira pitched well in relief, tossing 6.1 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. He struck out three and walked three.

Texeira's lone blemish came in the top of the fifth. Souza walked with one out, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Hood, extending the lead to 6-1.

Syracuse relievers Daniel Stange and Warner Madrigal each added scoreless frames to preserve the victory for Syracuse.

Cunningham led the G-Braves offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Jose Constanza went 2-for-4, improving him to 6-for-13 on the current homestand.

Souza paced the Chiefs attack, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBIs and two walks.

The Gwinnett Braves and Syracuse Chiefs play game two of the four-game series on Monday night, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. Right-hander Yunesky Maya (3-2, 2.60) will start for the G-Braves, while the Chiefs will counter with right-hander Josh Roenicke (3-4, 5.09).
