Red Sox Roll Past Wood Ducks In Finale
June 23, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Kinston, N.C. - The Down East Wood Ducks were unable to cash in with runners on base, as the Red Sox pulled away in the middle innings, Sunday, winning 10-2 in the finale.
Down East (1-3, 51-23) stranded 14 men on base and went just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, dropping their third straight game.
Salem (3-1, 28-43) got on the board first. Keith Curcio led off the ballgame with a triple to right-center, and scored on batter later on a Victor Acosta RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
The Woodies would answer in the second. They loaded the bases against Thad Ward, and pushed across a run on a Yonny Hernandez RBI groundout to tie the score at 1-1.
Ward in his Carolina League debut walked seven but gave up just one run, allowing three hits, and picking up two strikeouts.
The Red Sox jumped back ahead in the fourth. After a Ryan Fitzgerald infield single, Marcus Wilson belted a home run to left, his fourth of the series, and seventh of the year, to go ahead, 3-1.
It began a stretch of four consecutive two run innings for the Red Sox. Wilson highlighted the fifth with an RBI single, while Acosta drove in two runs with a double in the sixth. In the seventh Charlie Madden singled home a run and Tanner Nishioka came through with a sac fly, pushing the lead to 9-1.
Reid Anderson (loss, 3-4) wet 4.2 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, he walked two, and struck out six.
Jairo Beras gave up four more runs in relief, over 1.2 innings in his first outing for the Wood Ducks this year.
Down East would again load the bases in the eighth inning, as Tyler Depreta-Johnson forced home a run when he was hit by a pitch, but Down East was unable to take further advantage as a double-play ball ended the threat.
Depreta-Johnson would then take the mound in the ninth, becoming the first position player to pitch for the Woodies this year. He gave up four hits, including a run on a Curcio RBI single to make it 10-2.
The Wood Ducks hit the road Monday to take on the Carolina Mudcats at 7 p.m. Right-hander Christian Taugner (2-4, 5.32) will toe the slab for Carolina, while the Wood Ducks have not announced their starter for the game. The pregame show will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
