
Red Sox Recall INF Travis Shaw from Triple-A Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox today designated right-handed pitcher Edward Mujica for assignment. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, infielder Travis Shaw was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Shaw will be active for tonight's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto beginning at 7:07 p.m.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
Mujica, 30, went 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA (7 ER/13.2 IP) in 11 relief outings this season, allowing 15 hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. Signed by Boston in December 2013, he appeared in 75 games for the Red Sox from 2014-15, going 3-5 with eight saves, three holds, a 4.03 ERA (33 ER/73.2 IP) and 51 strikeouts. The native of Venezuela has played parts of 10 major league seasons between the Cleveland Indians (2006-08), San Diego Padres (2009-10), Miami Marlins (2011-12), St. Louis Cardinals (2012-13), and Red Sox (2014-15). In 455 career big league games, including four starts, he is 22-24 with 49 saves and a 3.80 ERA (216 ER/511.2 IP).
For Shaw, who will wear No. 47, this is his first career major league stint. The 25-year-old left-handed batter began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he has hit .189 (17-for-90) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 15 RBI, and seven walks in 24 games, while seeing time at third base (12 games), first base (11 games), and left field (1 game). He has driven in six runs over his last three games, going 4-for-13 (.307) with a home run, and has eight RBI in his last seven games. Signed by the Red Sox as a ninth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Shaw has hit .259 (440-for-1,699) with 111 doubles, 10 triples, 66 home runs, 265 RBI, 257 walks, and a .360 on-base percentage in 468 games over parts of five seasons in the minor leagues. In his three full minor league seasons from 2012-14, he led all Red Sox farmhands with 56 home runs. The native of Washington Court House, OH is the son of two-time All-Star closer Jeff Shaw, who pitched in the major leagues from 1990-2001.
