Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Columbus, OH) - Sean Marcum threw eight shutout innings to lead the Columbus Clippers to a 7-0 win on Friday night at Huntington Park. Jerry Sands' three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning was more than enough offense for the Clips, who won for the eight straight time at home.
Marcum allowed only four Pawtucket hits, struck out 8 and threw 72 of his 101 pitches for strikes to earn his fourth win for Columbus (15-13). The PawSox (18-11) lost for the first time on the road trip and were shut out for the third time.
Pawtucket starter Eduardo Rodriguez (3-1) walked consecutive hitters with one out in the first, matching his season total in 24.2 previous innings. Sands then pounded his second homer of the season, a deep shot to left field.
The Clippers added two more runs in the second inning, and would not score again until the eight. In the bottom of the second, Adam Moore doubled with one out and scored on an error by Garin Cecchini. Michael Martinez was plated by a Francisco Lindor double that made it 5-0.
Jess Todd walked the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and Moore struck again. His second double scored a pair and stretched the lead to seven.
Jackie Bradley, Jr. singled to lead off the game but was picked off by Marcum. Bradley, Jr. extended his hitting streak to seven.
The PawSox play game two in Columbus Saturday night 7:15pm. Left-hander Brian Johnson (3-2, 3.42) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Clippers will counter with lefty Nick Maronda (0-4, 6.38). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 7:00 pm.
Following the six-game road trip the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a seven-game homestand, beginning with three games against Indianapolis starting on Monday, May 11th. Good seats for all games are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
