EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Local baseball enthusiasts are invited to support patients in need by donating blood through the American Red Cross on July 2 at an Eau Claire Express pre-game blood drive.

Summer is a time for the days that never end. Time to watch fireworks, to have a picnic, to root for the home team. While many have fun making these memories, hospital patients are counting on eligible donors to make time to give blood so they can continue making and sharing their own summer memories and stories.

"The Eau Claire Express is excited to host a blood drive to help boost the blood supply this summer! What a great opportunity to be someone's hero by giving blood," said Doug Raftery, director of broadcasting and media sales. "After their blood donation, donors will have the opportunity to cheer on the Express as they take on the Lakeshore Chinooks."

All presenting donors will receive free same-day game admission and be entered into a drawing to win one of five $3,000 gift cards

The Red Cross asks all eligible blood and platelet donors to join its Summer of Stories campaign, which runs through Sept. 9. During the Red Cross Summer of Stories campaign, donors can share the personal impact blood and platelet donors can have on a patient in need and to help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available in the months ahead. In honor of our nation's independence, all presenting donors between July 1 and 15 could win one of five $3,000 American Express gift cards to help create their own summer of stories.

How to donate blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
