PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws controlled Sunday afternoon's contest from the tip off until the final buzzer as they ran their record to 2-0 on the season, downing the Erie BayHawks (0-2) at the Portland Expo Building, 127-100.
Maine jumped out to an early 8-2 lead with inside buckets from Damen Bell-Holter and Chris Wright. Romero Osby also asserted himself in the paint throughout the quarter and Frank Gaines caught the hot hand late as the Red Claws closed out the first quarter on a 14-3 run to take a 34-23 lead. Erie used a 14-5 run of their own to pull back to within four, but the hot play of Osby and Wright continued into the second quarter and Gaines scored five points late, including a buzzer beating layup to cap an 11-2 run and send the Red Claws into the locker room with a 64-55 cushion.
Maine continued to score in bunches as Wright, Bell-Holter and Osby combined for 11 points to open the second half and push the lead to 13. This was the first of two 11-4 runs for the Red Claws in the quarter, as Gaines once again found himself in the scoring column, registering seven points around a Chris Babb three-pointer to extend the lead to 90-73. The teams traded baskets to finish the quarter at 94-77. The Red Claws held the lead throughout the final quarter as they dominated the final seven minutes of the game, with Corey Allmond hitting back to back three-pointers on his way to 12 points in the quarter, allowing the Red Claws to cruise to their second win of the season.
The BayHawks were led by Mustafa Shakur's 24 points. Also contributing were former Red Claw Ricky Davis who chipped in 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists, Scott Suggs (18) and Chris Smith (10 points, 14 rebounds).
The Red Claws were paced by Wright, with 25 points and seven rebounds. Maine also saw Osby (19 points, 10 rebounds, three steals) and Bell-Holter (10 points, 12 rebounds) record double-doubles. Rounding out the top performers for the home team are Gaines (22), Marcel Anderson (13 points, six assists) and Allmond (12). Abdul Gaddy was a key facilitator, scoring eight while handing out nine assists.
Maine travels to Fort Wayne to take on the Mad Ants next Friday. The BayHawks will also be travelling to Fort Wayne one week from today.
