Red Bulls Stop NYCFC 1-0

New York City FC were on the road Sunday as they traveled to face Red Bulls in the third installment of the Hudson River Derby. The hosts took an early lead after Cristian Casseres converted from a freekick. Despite creating a number of solid openings, NYCFC were unable to restore parity to proceedings and that saw them suffer a defeat at Red Bull Arena.

New York City FC were in Hudson River Derby action on Sunday as they took on Red Bulls.

Head Coach Ronny Deila made just one change to the side that drew 0-0 with Nashville SC last time out, with the injured Anton Tinnerholm replaced by Tayvon Gray.

The derby spirit took hold from the first kick, and the hosts took an early lead when a freekick found Cristian Casseres free at the near post to convert.

At the other end, a daisy-cutter shot almost allowed Jesús Medina to convert from close range, but he was unable to adjust his feet in time.

Both teams struggled to generate a rhythm in the first half, and that saw clear-cut chances few and far between.

In the 41st minute, a break away from the Red Bulls put Omir Fernandez in behind, but some excellent pressure from Alex Callens forced him to fire wide.

NYCFC should have been level on the stroke half-time when a Gray cross found Santiago Rodríguez free in the box, but his poke towards goal was well saved.

The start of the second half brought with it a change for NYCFC as Medina departed the field and was replaced by Thiago Andrade.

Ronny Deila's men began exerting more control over possession, but they were often missing that final pass or touch when getting into the final third.

Keen to spark something, Deila introduced a triple substitution in the 68th minute, with Malte Amundsen, Andres Jasson and Héber replacing Gray, Gudi Thórarinsson, and Rodríguez.

Sean Johnson was kept busy and in the 72nd minute he palmed away a Patryk Klimala effort behind for a corner.

NYCFC almost earned an equalizer in sensational fashion when a corner ball was headed out of the penalty area onto the foot of Amundsen - his sweet volley crashing against the crossbar.

The visitors were now creating the better chances, and a long-distance strike from Moralez ricocheted off Keaton Parks, but was gathered by Carlos Coronel.

Unfortunately, an NYCFC goal did not come and that saw the Red Bulls emerge victorious in the third and final Hudson River Derby of the regular season.
