Red Bulls-Houston Dynamo Preview

September 3, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York Red Bulls News Release

Locked in a battle for first place in the Eastern Conference, the New York Red Bulls will travel to BBVA Compass Stadium Sunday to take on the Houston Dynamo.

New York got back in the win column and moved into a tie atop the conference when it defeated D.C. United, 2-1, in a thrilling match at Red Bull Arena last Saturday. Lloyd Sam and Tim Cahill recorded goals while Luis Robles stopped a penalty kick, as the Red Bulls were able to hold onto the win despite going down a man following Ibrahim Sekagya's 72nd minute red card. New York now has 42 points off a 12-9-6 record and moved alongside the Montreal Impact and Sporting Kansas City atop the division, three points ahead of the fourth place Philadelphia Union.

Houston currently has 37 points off a 10-8-7 and is in a fifth place tie with the New England Revolution for the last playoff spot in the east. The Dynamo was able to earn a point at TOYOTA Park last Sunday with an Adam Moffat 90th minute goal giving Houston a 1-1 tie against the Chicago Fire. Prior to facing New York, the Dynamo has a match Wednesday against the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium.

The Red Bulls are 6-3-7 all-time against the Dynamo and 0-3-4 on the road in regular season play. This is the second of three matches between the teams this year. On June 30, the Red Bulls got second half goals from forward Fabian Espindola and midfielder Jonny Steele to earn a 2-0 win in front of a sold out crowd at Red Bull Arena. New York will also face Houston on Oct. 20 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
