
Red Bulls Defeat Charlotte FC, 3-1, to Advance to U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals

The New York Red Bulls defeated Charlotte FC, 3-1, in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday night at MSU Soccer Park.
The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the second minute of action, when a New York corner played in by Tom Edwards found the feet of Aaron Long, who laid it off for Patryk Klimala. Klimala placed the ball in the back of the net to give New York the lead.
Charlotte leveled the match in the eighth minute, after forward Andre Shinyashiki found the feet of Daniel Rios, who cut in and fired a shot to the near post.
New York took the lead in the 64th minute, when Klimala dribbled past the Charlotte backline and played a ball across their goal box, which found the incoming Dylan Nealis, who tapped the ball in the back of the net.
The Red Bulls added a third in the 92nd minute, after Luquinhas dribbled his way into Charlotte's box and played it right across to Tom Barlow, who tapped it in.
The Red Bulls moved their all-time Open Cup record to 29-22-3.
New York has outscored their opponents, 8-2, in Open Cup play this season.
Klimala's goal in the second minute was the quickest U.S. Open Cup goal scored by a Red Bulls player in franchise history.
The Polish striker scored his first career U.S. Open Cup goal and added his fifth across all competitions.
Klimala added his first career Open Cup assist and his fourth across all competitions this season.
Nealis scored his first professional goal and his first career Open Cup goal.
Barlow scored his second career Open Cup goal, which both have been scored at MSU Soccer Park.
The Saint Louis, Missouri native has scored three goals this season across all competitions.
Brazilian midfielder Luquinhas tallied his third Open Cup assist this season and his fifth across all competitions.
Long recorded his first career Open Cup assist and his first of the season.
Following Sunday's match, New York will begin a two-match homestand, which starts with their U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 matchup against Charlotte FC on Wednesday, May 25, at MSU Soccer Park on the campus of Montclair State University.
