Everett Silvertips News Release
CALGARY - Kevin Davis' early third period goal stood as the game winner and Dorrin Luding turned in his first career WHL shutout on 29 saves as the Everett Silvertips edged the Calgary Hitmen, 1-0 before 4,982 fans at Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday in league action.
The Silvertips, snapping back to back losses that came in the final four minutes of regulation or less, earned their first win in Calgary since 2013-14 while the penalty kill only had to extinguish two chances. The Tips edged Calgary in the face-off circle, 33-27 while keeping Jake Bean off the scoresheet in his return from the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Tips outshot Calgary, 11-9 in the first period and earned the two best chances in the period. Martin Fasko-Rudas misfired on a breakaway which deflected off the post, and Nick Schneider robbed Matt Fonteyne on a post-to-post feed in the final minute.
Calgary turned up the heat with a 13-10 shots edge in the second period and Dorrin Luding turned all the shots away, while Calgary misfired on a two-on-one opportunity late in the period.
Early in the third period, Riley Sutter forced the puck deep into the Calgary zone. From the left corner, Sutter threaded a pass to Kevin Davis, stationed at the right point. Davis fired a shot through traffic for his first goal of the season at 3:03 for a 1-0 edge.
The Tips maintained the lead late in regulation and Nick Schneider was pulled for a sixth attacker. Calgary generated two good looks inside the dots, but failed to find the equalizer.
Schneider made 32 saves on 33 shots for the loss.
The Tips move onto Edmonton for their next game on Sunday, visiting the Oil Kings at Rogers Place at 3:00 p.m. PT (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / Tips App). They return home Wednesday, Oct. 18 vs. Tri-City at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets.
