Rebels Down Broncos 2-1

November 18, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Red Deer Rebels News Release

After all the drama from the week that was the Rebels were no doubt excited to get back on the ice in a game situation and start their new era with Brent Sutter behind the bench. Also adding to the excitement was the fact that the Rebels were playing their first game at the Enmax Centrium in three weeks.

Newly acquired Rhyse Dieno, wearing #14, made his Rebels debut playing on the starting line with Turner Elson and Brooks Maxwell.

Patrik Bartosak made a couple of good saves early on until the Broncos opened the scoring at the 5:55 mark of the first period. Chance Lund banged home his seventh goal of the season with Josh Derko and Tanner LeSann earning the assists. 1-0 Swift Current.

Neither team was able to mount much of a consistent attack from that point on. The Broncos would take their 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Rebels outshout the Broncos in the opening frame by a 10-7 margin.

The Rebels struck quickly to tie this game in the second stanza, and it was the newcomer getting it done. A very crafty play by Brady Gaudet as he aimed his long shot toward the end boards. The rebound came right out in front of the net where Dieno was there to fire it past Broncos goalie Eetu Laurikainen. Dieno told Cam Moon during the pregame show on 106.7 The Drive that he has hoping to score one for the home fans. He did just that, making it a 1-1 game.

To say that there weren't many scoring chances in the first ten minutes of the period would be a tragic understatement, each team had managed just two shot on net to that point. The Broncos ended up outshooting the Rebels 9-6 in the frame, evening the shot clock 16-16 through two periods. These teams would head to the third tied 1-1.

There wasn't much to give between these two teams (yet again) to start this period as both teams continued with their strong defensive play. But a solid play from their captain would give the Rebels their first lead of the game. Turner Elson, working a criss cross with Dieno, charged toward the Broncos before firing a backhander on net. The puck had enough steam to sneak through Laurikainen's five hole and crawl across the goal line for Elson's seventh goal of the season. Haydn Fleury and Brooks Maxwell would be credited with the assists. 2-1 Rebels at the 7:32 mark of the period.

Desperate to get things back on even terms, the Broncos would turn up the pressure on Patrik Bartosak. But as he has done so many times this season, the Czech netminder did more than his fair share of work to keep his team ahead. He saved perhaps his best save of the night for the final seconds, getting his left pad on the puck mere seconds before the final buzzer. The Rebels held on for a 2-1 victory. Final shots on goal were 27-26 in favour of the Rebels.
