Real Salt Lake Drowns Rapids in Tournament Opener
KISSIMMEE, Florida - Real Salt Lake claimed a dominant 2-0 victory over Rocky Mountain rival Colorado Rapids on Sunday night in their return to play for the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.
Midfielder Albert Rusnák's first-half strike and eventual game-winner was supplemented by midfielder Damir Kreilach's goal in the second half to usher RSL to the win. Goalkeeper Zac MacMath made four second-half saves to earn his second shutout for the club in the win.
Forward Corey Baird nearly staked RSL to the early lead when he worked into the box up the left side, but his curling shot caromed off the crossbar and the match remained scoreless. That set the tone for Salt Lake, outshooting Colorado 5-3 in the first half with two shots on goal while holding the Rapids at bay with none. RSL broke through to take the lead in the 27th minute when a redirected cross fell right into the path of Rusnà k's late run into the box and he put it away to send RSL into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
As Colorado pressed for the equalizer in the second half, forward Douglas Martinez drew a penalty kick that was eventually saved by Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin. RSL would find the separating goal however in the 76th minute when Kreilach rifled a low shot from outside the box to solidify the victory.
UP NEXT: RSL will face Minnesota United on July 17 at 8:30 p.m. MT from the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

RSL: Damir Kreilach (Corey Baird), 76th minute: Fielding a ball in the attacking third, Kreilach turned to take a touch toward goal before firing a low shot into the bottom corner of the net for the 2-0 lead.
