Real Monarchs News Release
SANDY, Utah (Friday, May 15, 2015) - Real Monarchs SLC open up the Rio Tinto Stadium gates for the club's first and only home match in May Saturday night, against West rival Portland Timbers 2 for the third time this season. Saturday night's kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on RealMonarchs.com, ESPN700 AM, and Real Monarchs' YouTube Page. Saturday's match will also be aired live on KMYU TV, continuing its broadcast of all Monarchs' home matches. Tickets are still available for tomorrow night's match at the Stadium Box Office or on the club site.
Real Monarchs (1-5-2, 5 points, 12th West) return to league action following a stoppage-time, 3-2 loss on the road to Austin Aztex last Saturday. Real Monarchs went down early in the match when FW Kris Tyrpak received the ball in the 6-yard box and slotted it past GK Lalo Fernandez. Head Coach Freddy Juarez' Real Monarchs stormed back for two goals on either side of halftime (FW Max Rauhofer 40', MF Lucas Baldin 57') to take the lead, which looked to be enough for all 3 points. However, the home Aztex battled back and scored two late goals including the stoppage-time game-winner, sending Monarchs home empty handed.
Portland Timbers 2 (3-3-1, 10 points, 7st West) have lost its last three matches in a row, dropping them to mid-table in the Western Conference. Timbers' last match was a 2-0 home loss to Orange County Blues last Sunday. Former Real Salt Lake MF Will Johnson played a full 90 minutes in that match, with four shots as he is recovering from a leg injury. Johnson is expected to be on the T2 roster again this weekend at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Monarchs History v. Portland Timbers
This will be the third and final meeting between the two clubs this season, with Monarchs posting a 0-1-1 record in that time. FW Coco Navarro scored the club's first-ever goal in their first meeting on March 29th. During that match Timbers 2 FW Kharlton Belmar lead his team to a 3-1 win over Monarchs.
Monarchs hosted Portland in their inaugural season home opener on April 8, when the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw.
Former RSL MF Will Johnson to Make Rio Tinto Stadium Return
Former Real Salt Lake MF Will Johnson was traded to Portland Timbers in 2013, captaining his new team to first in the Western Conference and a CCL berth in the 2014/15 season. Johnson's 2014 campaign ended when he broke his right leg after colliding with Toronto FC DF Mark Bloom on September 27, 2014. This season the Portland captain has made two appearances with the USL club as he works his way back from injury.
Monarchs Learn 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Opponent and 3rd Round Draw
On Wednesday night, Real Monarchs learned the identity of its first opponent in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Monarchs will travel to Long Island to face Long Island Rough Riders (PDL) next Wednesday, May 20 at 6 p.m. MT, after the PDL side downed Brooklyn Italians (NPSL), 3-1, earlier this week.
U.S. Soccer announced the Third-Round draw Thursday that delineates the Monarchs path should they beat the Rough Riders next week. Should the Monarchs win on May 20, it will host the winner between Harpos FC (PASL) and fellow USL team Colorado Spring Switchbacks FC (USL) on Wednesday, May 27, at 7:00 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium.
