Ready To Draft
January 13, 2003 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
San Jose Earthquakes News Release
The Earthquakes will take part in the MLS SuperDraft this Friday, January 17 from the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, MO. The Quakes own seven picks in this year's SuperDraft, including the sixth, 16th, 23rd, 36th, 39th, 46th, and 56th overall selections in the six-round draft. San Jose head coach Frank Yallop, assistant coach Dominic Kinnear and General Manager Johnny Moore will all be in attendance at the draft. The trio is currently in Fort Lauderdale, FL, spending three days at the MLS pre-draft combine. The Earthquakes coaches are in the process of watching the best senior college players in the country as well as the latest NIKE Project-40 signings and the U.S. Under-20 National Team. When the combine ends on Tuesday, Yallop, Kinnear and Moore will travel to Kansas City to prepare for the draft.
Training For Their Country
Earthquakes players Landon Donovan and Richard Mulrooney continue to train with the United States National Team in Bradenton, FL. Donovan and Mulrooney were named by head coach Bruce Arena to the team's 27-man training camp roster in preparation for the January 18 friendly match against Canada at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Practices have remained tough throughout the week as the team shapes up for Saturday's contest. Mulrooney is marking his return to the field after fracturing his ankle September 14, 2002 against Los Angeles, and despite some soreness to the bone the Quakes all-star has been able to participate at full strength in all activities.
The two will line-up against a familiar face Saturday, as Earthquakes forward Dwayne De Rosario has been training with the Canadian National Team and will compete against his MLS teammates. The U.S. holds a 9-8-8 advantage against Canada in a rivalry dating back to 1925. However, the United States has not lost to Canada in nine consecutive games, compiling a 5-0-4 record since a 2-0 loss in Vancouver on April 2, 1985. The U.S. is also currently riding a three-game shutout streak over Canada, holding Canada scoreless in seven of their last eight match-ups.
Barclay Continues To Work
A busy off-season for Devin Barclay continued when he played 90 minutes for the United States Under-20 National Team at the MLS pre-draft combine Sunday, January 12. Barclay played the entire game for the U.S. in a 2-2 draw against a team of MLS hopefuls. Barclay and the U.S. Under-20 team will continue to play matches during the combine. Barclay has remained busy this off-season, playing for the Under-20 team in the CONCACAF Qualifying tournament in early November and then heading to Europe with the NIKE Project-40 squad on its annual European tour from November 22 - December 6. Barclay also trained with the U.S. Under-23 club at the end of December before coming to the MLS pre-draft combines with the U.S. Under-20's.
