Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (38-25-7=83, 3rd North Division) of the ECHL had their chances but were unable to solve former Royal goaltender, Cody Rudkowsky, in the critical moments as the Cincinnati Cyclones defeated Reading 3-2 at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. Rudkowsky (15-21-5; 30/32), who played in Reading from 2003-06 and holds virtually every career goaltending record for the team, stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced to run his record to 6-1-2 since joining the Cyclones at the trade deadline. John Murray (3-2-0; 13/16) took the loss for the Royals, although Danny Taylor (no decision; 0/0; 0:36) took over in net for Reading for a short moment in the first period.
Reading struck first 6:31 into the game on a five-on-three power play-shortly after Danny Taylor had come into the game. After the Royals worked the puck around the perimeter in the offensive end, P.J. Atherton ripped a blast off the top of the left circle that beat Rudkowsky high to the glove side for his fifteenth goal of the year. Cincinnati responded with their first of what would be three power play goals on the night 13:22 into the first, when David Desharnais was allowed to walk from behind the Royals' goal to the top of the crease, where a Reading defender knocked the puck off his stick. The puck dropped, however, to the stick of Sean Perkins whose shot deflected off a Reading stick and into the upper right corner of the net for his fourth goal of the year. Cincinnati took their first lead of the game at the 16:35 mark of the first when Ryan Russell scored the first of what would be two power play goals on the night. Barrett Eghoetz took a shot out of the right circle that Murray stopped, but the rebound fell to the left side of the crease, where Russell batted the bounding puck behind Murray to make it 2-1, Cincinnati.
The Royals tied the game 7:46 into the second while playing with the man advantage. Patrick Jarrett took a hard shot from the right circle that Rudkowsky appeared to stop, but the puck slipped through his legs and into the net for Jarrett's ninth goal of the year. The Cyclones got what proved to be the game winner at the 10:16 mark of the second when Russell walked off the right wall, gained the dot in the right face-off circle, and ripped a low snap shot that beat Murray low to the stick side for his fifth goal of the year. Reading pressed hard through the remainder of the game and generated a number of scoring opportunities (and hit at least two pipes), but Rudkowsky made the stops he had to in order to remain unbeaten against his former team time in his pro career (5-0-1).
The Royals return to action on Wednesday night (6:35 pm) when the Johnstown Chiefs visit the Sovereign Center. The game night broadcast on Sunday will begin at 6:05 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
