Elmira Jackals News Release
DAYTON, OH - Elgin Reid's goal early in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Elmira Jackals beat the Dayton Bombers 3-1 Sunday in front of 3,291 fans at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. Combined with Reading's 3-2 regulation loss to Cincinnati Sunday, the Jackals magic number for clinching home ice advantage for the opening round of the playoffs drops to one.
As was the case in Saturday's 7-2 Jackals' win, Matt Johnson got the visitors on the board first at 6:58 of the opening period, snapping home his seventh of the season between the pads of Rejean Beauchemin to make it 1-0. Bruce Watson and Jim McKenzie, both with three-point outings last night, assisted on the play.
Reid netted his first professional goal 1:04 into the second period to push Elmira's lead to 2-0 before Pierre-Luc Faubert added his 29th of the year to make it 3-0 at 3:28, doing so by scoring on two of their first three shots on Beauchemin.
The Bombers pulled to within 3-1 when Brad Bonello banged in his 17th of the season at 5:11 of the middle period on the power play (1-for-5 on the night).
Shortly thereafter, the Jackals had a chance to break the game open when Kriss Grundmanis picked up a match penalty for slew footing Elmira's Jim McKenzie at center ice. McKenzie left the game at 5:24 of the second period and did not return, leaving Elmira with 13 skaters to complete the contest.
Elmira failed to scored on the major penalty (0-for-5 in the game) and a fairly conservative third period followed with no scoring and just 13 combined shots.
Joel Martin stopped 20 shots to pick up his 26th win of the year while Beauchemin made 31 saves in defeat. The Jackals registered a 34-21 shots advantage for the game.
The Jackals return home to kick off the final week of the regular season with a Wednesday night match against the Trenton Devils (7:05 p.m.) at First Arena. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including the Gray Street box office - First Arena, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone at 722-3711 or 734-PUCK (7825).
