Columbia Inferno News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 29, 2008)-- The Columbia Inferno (31-28-5-6, 73 points) finished the season series with the host S.C. Stingrays (44-22-2-1, 91 points) with a 5-4 loss in overtime on Saturday night.
Trent Campbell gave the Rays an early 1-0 lead when he beat Todd Ford 50 seconds into the game with his 16th of the year. The Inferno evened the game 17 minutes later thanks to Steve McJannet's 16th of the year, a power play tally that beat Davis Parley with assists to Jeff Miles and Reid Cashman.
The Stingrays built a 3-1 lead in the second period thanks to goals from Todd Griffith and Matt Scherer. Daniel Sparre helped the Inferno trim the deficit when his 26th of the year beat Parley at 16:30. Liam Huculak and newly signed rookie Joel Hanson notched the assists, marking the first point in Hanson's professional career.
Jeremy Hall unassisted goal tied the game 3-3 for the Inferno about a minute into the third period. Todd Perry earned a 4-3 lead for Columbia midway through the third when his sixth of the year, with help from Miles and Cashman, beat Parley on the power play. The Inferno looked to be headed for a regulation victory until Matt Smith beat Ford with just 18 seconds left in the game to force overtime.
The Stingrays again wasted no time scoring, as Travis Morin netted his 34th of the season just 70 seconds into the extra frame.
Parley finished with 25 saves on 29 shots, while Ford stopped 27 of 32.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Friday, April 4th to host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. for the final home game of the 2007-08 regular season.
