Reading Royals News Release
TOP NOTES OF THE WEEK
1. The Royals 3-2 loss to the Elmira Jackals in the 'Kid's Day' matinee last Monday snapped a winning streak for the Royals during which the team won three consecutive games in regulation for the first time this season.
2. Reading sustained home losses in both of the games played this week. The Royals have now compiled a record of 6-14-0 at home this year with sixteen regular season games still to play at the Sovereign Center. The team record for home regulation losses is 16, which was set in 2002-03 when the Royals went 17-16-3 at home.
3.The Royals hosted the ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition for the second time in team history this past week. This marked the first time in the twelve year history of the ECHL Skills Competition that the team that won the Skills (National Conference 9-7) did not win the All-Star Game (American Conference 11-5). The eleven goals scored by the American Conference in the ASG tied a league record-as did the six goal margin of victory, which tied the league record set by the Northern All- Stars in their 8-2 win at Estero, Florida, in 2003. The American Conference rang off three goals in a 1:19 span of the third period to set a new record for the fastest three goals scored in an ECHL ASG, and those goals helped the American Conference pull away for good from the National Conference.
4. Royal Tyler Doig scored the fifth goal for the American Conference to break a 4-4 tie and give the team a lead that it would never relinquish through the remainder of the ASG. With that goal, Doig joined Simon Tremblay, Brian McCullough, David Masse, Ryan Kinasewich, and Brett Hemingway as players who scored in an ECHL ASG while representing the Royals.
5. Steve Ward came in third in the Reebok O-Stick Hardest Shot contest in the ECHL All-Star Skills Competition last Tuesday night with a shot of 95.4 miles per hour. Ward is the third Royal to have competed in the hardest shot competition and registered the hardest shot ever for a player representing Reading: (i) T.J. Kemp (92.5 mph) @ Fresno, California in 2006; and (ii) Greg Hogeboom (92.4 mph) @ Boise, Idaho in 2007. Ward had also extended his team-long eleven game point streak (4g- 8a=12pts) in Monday's loss to Elmira; but that streak was snapped in Reading's 6-4 loss to Wheeling on Saturday.
6. The Royals 3-2 loss to the Elmira Jackals on Monday marked the tenth time this year that Reading has sustained a one goal loss in regulation. This is tied for the most one-goal regulation losses in the ECHL this season. (Bakersfield is 7-10-6 in one-goal games; the Royals are 6-10-2).
7. Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Wheeling Nailers marked the sixth time this season that Reading has allowed six or more goals against in a single game. The team is 0-6-0 in those games. The Royals have allowed 163 goals against in forty-two games played this year, which translates into a 3.88 team goals against average (twenty-second in the league). The Royals have scored 125 goals this year, which is a 2.98 goals for per game average (sixteenth in the league).
8. Chris Stevens registered two multi-point games this week for the Royals. Stevens scored 1:49 into Monday's 3-2 loss to Elmira, marking the second quickest goal into a game this year for the Royals. He also assisted on the Royals' other goal in that game, which tied the game at two 14:11 into the second period. Stevens also scored the Royals' first goal in Saturday's 6-4 loss to Wheeling at the 3:51 mark of the third period (to make the score 3-1, Wheeling). He also assisted on the team's fourth goal in that game with 2:06 remaining in regulation. Stevens has racked up four multi-point games in his last eight played (5g-4a=9pts).
9. Brock Hooton assisted on the Royals' second goal on Monday and picked up two assists in Saturday's loss to Wheeling. Hooton is currently riding a ten game point streak (6g-14a=20pts) and team-long six game assist streak (10a). Hooton leads the Royals with 22 assists and 35 points (13g-22a=35pts) and is playing to a plus-1 (+1), which is tied with Rob LaLonde for the best plus-minus for active Reading players.
10. Kirk MacDonald scored a goal in both of the games played by the Royals this week, and he is currently riding a team-long four game goal scoring streak (5 goals). Mac- Donald is also riding a five game point streak (5g-4a=9pts). MacDonald leads the Royals with fifteen goals and eleven multi-point performances.
11. Both Mac Faulkner and Rob LaLonde scored a goal and picked up an assist in Saturday's loss against Wheeling. For Faulkner, who is currently fifth in the league with 152 shots, this was his eighth multi-point game of the year. For LaLonde, Saturday's goal was his second of the year-both of which have been scored on the power play- and this was his third multi-point game of the year.
CLOSING NOTES
1. The Royals scored a pair of power play goals in Saturday's 6-4 loss, marking the fourth time in the last seven games that Reading has scored two power play goals in a single game. (The Royals have scored two or more PPG in 12 of the 42 games played this season.) Reading has scored 37 PPG in 225 chances with the man advantage (16.4% scoring ratio-eleventh in the league).
2. Reading allowed a power play goal against in both of the games played this week. The Royals have given up at least one PPGA in the last sixth consecutive games and in thirteen of the last fifteen played. (The Royals PK has blanked the opposition's PP just six times this year). Reading has given up 55 PPGA in 249 PP chances for the opposition this year (77.9% kill ratio-21 in the league).
3. The Royals scored the game's first goal 1:49 into Monday's 3-2 loss to Elmira. In all four games this year in which the Royals have scored the game's first goal within the first three minutes of the game, the Royals have sustained a loss. This marked this sixteenth time this year that Reading has scored the game's FG and the team has compiled a 5-9-2 record in those games.
4. In both of the losses sustained by the Royals this week, the team entered the third period trailing. Reading has trailed the opponent entering into the third period in 27 of the 42 games played this year and has compiled a record of 2-23- 2 in those games. The Royals are 0-11-0 at home when trailing after two periods.
5. Monday's game marked the sixteenth time this year that the Royals have scored two goals or less. Reading is 0-16-0 in those games.
6. Kevin Harvey had 2 multi-point games for the Syracuse in the AHL this past week. He also fought Toronto's Phil Oreskovic 2 seconds into Friday's win.
