1/28 & 1/30 vs. Mississippi, 7:05 p.m. - Home (0-0-0), Away (0-0-0)

The Sea Wolves will visit the Warm Memorial on their northern road trip this Wednesday and Friday. It will be the first time in the Chiefs' 21 years that they will play the Sea Wolves. Mississippi sits in fifth place in the South Division with 16 wins and 36 points. The Wolves just ended a six-game losing streak last Sunday with a 4-2 win over the second place South Carolina Stingrays. Former Robert Morris star Ryan Cruthers leads Mississippi in his rookie season with 19 goals and 38 points. The Wolves will bring back former Chiefs defenseman Justin Coutu, goaltender Ryan Munce, and broadcaster Leif Skodnick with them to Johnstown. Wednesday night's featured promotion is a team poster giveaway to the first 1,500 fans through the door. On Friday night the Chiefs will host a We Score...You Score promotion where based on the goal differential, if the Chiefs win, everyone in attendance will be eligible for a discounted ticket to a future game.

1/31 vs. Reading, 7:05 p.m. - Home (3-0-0), Away (3-0-0)

After hosting the Royals three times in three weeks during November, the Chiefs have gotten a break from seeing their in-state rivals in Johnstown. The rivalry will be renewed, though, when Reading visits this Saturday. Johnstown is 6-0-0 against Reading this season, and 10-0-0 dating back to February 1, 2008. Reading sits seventh in the North Division with 13 wins and 28 points. It will be the first time Johnstown has seen Reading since former Chief, and Royal, Larry Courville was named the team's interim head coach on January 6. Since Courville took over, Reading is 4-4-0, and had a three-game winning streak from 1/10-1/17. The Chiefs will be hosting their second Pink in the Rink event to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer this Saturday. The team will be auctioning off five pinnk team autographed sticks and two pink game-issued goalie sticks with the proceeds being donated to breast cancer research.

Last Week: (0-2-0)

1/23 vs. Wheeling: L 3-2

Johnstown and Wheeling met with first place on the line last Friday, but the Chiefs weren't able to get off to a fast start and fell behind by three goals after two periods. The third-period rally started quickly with a power play goal from Kyle Bushee 54 seconds into the period. It was Bushee's third goal of the season and first on the power play. Blair Yaworski added another power play goal at 5:49 of the third to draw the Chiefs within one. It was Yaworski's second on the PP this season, and his sixth goal against the Nailers in three games. The Chiefs were unable to find the equalizer, though, and Wheeling moved to 3-0-0 in Johnstown this season.

1/24 at Trenton: L 3-2 Johnstown visited Trenton for the final time this season last Saturday looking to end a three-game losing streak in the Garden State's capital. Things started out very well with Sean Berkstresser's shorthanded goal in the first period that staked the Chiefs to a 1-0 lead. All-Star goalie Kris Mayotte turned in 12 saves in the first to make the lead stand up. Trenton put up two unanswered to start the second, though, leaving the Chiefs down by one. Petr Pohl rectified that problem with his fourth power play goal of the season with 45 seconds left in the frame. Trenton got the quick start in the third again, and tallied the go-ahead goal just 42 seconds in. Johnstown's offense roared to life in an effort to tie the game, but Gerald Coleman made two point-blank saves on Kyle Bushee and Blair Yaworski to keep the Devils ahead. The loss was only Johnstown's third when scoring the first goal of the game.

Hello and Goodbye: The Johnstown Chiefs' roster continued to evolve last week with the addition of two players and the subtraction of another. Johnstown added rookie defenseman Ryan Card in a trade with Ontario, and also had rookie center Toby LaFrance reassigned by Springfield from Stockton. The 24-year-old Card appeared in four games for the Reign, but did not register a point. His stint with Ontario followed three seasons at St. Thomas University (CIS), where he recorded seven goals and 20 points in 74 games. Card also played five seasons in the OHL, three with the Peterborough Petes and two with the Guelph Storm. The 6-foot-1, 180 pound blueliner appeared in over 300 games in the OHL, tallying 24 goals and 92 points. In 2004-05 he led the Storm defensemen (second on the team) with 22 assists and was a teammate of Trevor Hendrikx with Peterborough in 2002-03 and 2001-02. The Chiefs also had rookie center Toby LaFrance is a playmaking center/right wing who played 27 games with Stockton and earned 15 points (3G, 12A). Prior to turning pro the 5-foot-9, 190 pound forward from Granby, Quebec skated four seasons in the QMJHL with Victoriaville and totaled 112 goals, 117 assists, and 148 PIMs in 230 games. The third major transaction of last week saw the Chiefs trade veteran winger Mike Sgroi to the Utah Grizzlies in exchange for future considerations. In his second season with the team, Sgroi had three goals in 12 games, along with 22 penalty minutes after posting 13 goals, 25 points, and 192 PIMs in 27 games with Johnstown last season.

Not ‘Stressing It: Rookie winger Sean Berkstresser has settled into a nice scoring groove since the calendar turned to 2009. Playing an increased role and logging more minutes due to call-ups and injuries, Berkstresser has tallied seven points (5G, 2A) in nine games in January. His goal total leads the team this month, and he had his first pro multi-point game (1G, 1A) on Jan. 9 at Elmira. Before this month, Berkstresser had only three markers in his first 20 games this season. His goal to open the scoring at 15:14 of the second period against the Bombers last Saturday ended a 95 minute 14 second scoreless drought against Dayton that stretched back to October 24. The Apollo, PA native began his pro career last season with the Wheeling Nailers and scored a goal and an assist in eight games. That came after completing his career at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh where he finished third on the team in scoring in 2007-08 (9G, 16A), and was second on the team with 11 goals in 2005-06.

Powering Up: Kyle Bushee's first power play goal of the season at 54 seconds of the third period against Wheeling last Friday snapped Johnstown's 0-for-38 skid on the power play. It was the first power play goal Johnstown scored in the 2009 calendar year, and was followed closely by a Blair Yaworski power play goal in the same game. The next night in Trenton, Petr Pohl converted on the man advantage with 45 seconds left in the second period to give Johnstown PPGs in back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 30 and 31. The multi-power play goal game on Jan. 23 was the first since a 7-3 win in Wheeling on Dec. 19.
