Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, N.J., -- The Trenton Devils came out of the All-Star Break much like they did going into it, by winning at Sovereign Bank Arena. The Devils defeated the Elmira Jackals and Johnstown Chiefs at home, and will play the Jackals Friday and Saturday night in Elmira.
COLEMAN SAVES DEVILS FROM JACKALS: An outstanding performance by Gerald Coleman allowed the Trenton Devils to steal a victory away from the Elmira Jackals, a 2-1 decision at Sovereign Bank Arena Friday night. The Devils scored both of their goals on deflections from the point, the first coming eight minutes into the contest. Trevor Kell deflected a Ryan Gunderson shot into the net on the power play for his 11th goal of the season. Matt Radoslovich scored the other tally for Trenton on a similar play. Dylan Quaile kept the play alive by preventing the puck from getting out of the Elmira zone, firing a shot towards the net that Radoslovich tipped in for his seventh goal of the season at 11:14. Elmira scored their only goal on an unusual play 1:22 into the second, as Coleman was unable to cover up the puck in the crease, resulting in a goalmouth scramble that ended with Derek Couture scoring his third goal of the season. Coleman would take charge for the rest of the contest, stopping the final 18 shots by Elmira, including 14 in the third period. His best save came in the closing minutes, as he deflected a Craig Switzer shot with his glove behind his head and into the protective netting.
DEVILS WIN EIGHTH IN A ROW AT HOME: Jeff Prough's goal 42 seconds into the third was enough for the Trenton Devils in their record-breaking 3-2 win over the Johnstown Chiefs Saturday night. Prough whacked in a rebound off a Dave Leaderer shot early in the final period to preserve the Devils' win, their eighth in a row at Sovereign Bank Arena and their ninth in the month of January, both new Trenton records. Things looked bad early for Trenton as Sean Berkstresser scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway 3:43 into the contest, his eighth goal of the season. The Devils controlled most of the second period, in which they broke through on a shot by Dan Eves three minutes into the stanza. Trenton took the lead on the power play at 5:16, when Trevor Kell backhanded the puck between the legs of Kris Mayotte. The Chiefs tied the game with 45 seconds left the period, as Petr Pohl fired a wrist shot from the right circle. Despite the late momentum by the Chiefs, Prough deflated that with his game-winning goal in the third, his 14th of the season and sixth against the Chiefs. The Devils outshot the Chiefs in the contest, 48-28.
GREETINGS FROM THE ALL-STAR GAME: Devils defensemen Matt Cohen and Ryan Gunderson each performed well in the ECHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, as they were paired together throughout most of the contest. Cohen tallied an assist and finished the game with a +2. Gunderson, who was playing in his second straight ECHL All-Star Game, ended the game with a +3. Cohen impressed the fans during Tuesday's Skills Competition with the second-hardest slap shot, clocking in a 97.2 miles-per-hour.
QUICK HITS: Jeff Prough has 13 points (6g, 7a) in 11 games during the month of January...Eric Castonguay has five points (1g, 4a) in his last five games...Gerald Coleman has 12 wins since joining the Devils on November 26th. Despite missing time due to injury, he is tied with David Leggio of Florida and John Murray of Ontario for the most wins since that date.
