(Trenton, NJ)- The Reading Phillies pounded 14 hits and defeated Trenton 8-3 on Sunday night from Waterfront Park. Jason Stephens got the spot start for Trenton and gave up six hits and three runs in three innings for the no decision. Mike Stutes (5-4) pitched seven innings and gave up five hits and two runs to earn the victory for Reading.
Reegie Corona gave Trenton a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning with his third home run of the season over the right field wall. Reading would snatch the lead right back in the top of the 2nd as Kevin Mahar led off the inning with a single. The next batter Gus Milner drilled a double to right field which plated Mahar and tied the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Tuffy Gosewich tallied his first of three hits in the game to score Milner and put Reading on top 2-1.
In the bottom of the 2nd, catcher Jesus Montero tallied his first Eastern League home run, a leadoff shot off the batters eye in centerfield to tie the game at 2-2. Reading took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 5th off reliever Wilkins Arias (1-2) on a Neil Sellers RBI triple. The RBI for Sellers was his fourth of the series as he tallied three in last night's game. Arias gave up two runs and five hits in 2.1 innings to suffer the loss. In the top of the 6th, Reading tallied three more runs when Mike Taylor blasted his team-leading 14th hom run of the season and gave Reading a 6-2 lead.
The Phillies tacked on two more runs in the 8th when Richie Robnett's error in left field allowed Carlos Leon to reach. The next batter Taylor, doubled in his fourth run of the game to put Reading ahead 7-2. Two batters later, Taylor came home on a wild pitch to make the score 8-2. The Thunder scored a run in the bottom of the 9th after a Marcos Vechionacci RBI single to make the final score 8-3.
Trenton and Reading will continue their four-game series from Waterfront Park Monday afternoon as RHP Ryan Pope (2-5, 4.52) will start for the Thunder. LHP Joe Savery (9-1, 3.32) will start for Reading. Game time is set for 12:05 p.m.
