Pacheco Powers Curve Past Bowie

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Baysox four-game winning streak came to an end as Curve designated hitter Jonel Pacheco hit a pair of home runs to power the Curve past Bowie 8-4 Sunday evening. Baysox starter Tim Bascom (2-1, 3.75 ERA) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, over 5.0 innings. With the loss the Baysox fall to 41-34 on the season, 9.5 games behind division-leading Akron.

The Curve jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gorkys Hernandez and Jose Tabata hit back-to-back one-out doubles to score the first run. Tabata stole third base and scored on a two-out single by Jim Negrych.

The Baysox scored a run in the second inning on an RBI double by center fielder Daniel Figueroa and took the lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker doubled to center field to lead off the inning. Robert Valido followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. First baseman Eric Crozier hit a groundball to short and reached on a throwing error by Brian Friday as Tucker scored and Valido moved to third on the play. Mike Costanzo lifted a sacrifice fly to center to put the Baysox up 3-2.

Altoona came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Hernandez led off with a single but was thrown out attempting to steal second base. With one out, Tabata reached on a fielding error by Valido and moved to second when Bascom walked third baseman Pedro Alvarez. Negrych lined an RBI single to center field and Pacheco followed with a three-run shot to left, putting Altoona up 6-3.

The Baysox cut the lead to two in the top of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Adam Donachie led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Figueroa. Donachie scored when Tucker delivered a two-out RBI single to left field.

Pacheco would get to Bascom again with a solo home run off the righty in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Curve added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hernandez delivered a sacrifice fly against Baysox reliever Chad Thall.

The Baysox made a valiant attempt at a comeback, loading the bases in the eighth inning against Curve reliever Jean Machi. Donachie drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a two-out single by catcher Guillermo Rodriguez. Tucker walked to load the bases and Valido had a 2-0 count before grounding out to end the inning.

The Baysox would put a pair of runners on board in the ninth inning as well, but were unable to push a run across. Second baseman Miguel Abreu drew a two-out walk and right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion lined a single to center to bring the tying run into the on-deck circle before Donachie flew out to end the game.

Tucker, Concepcion and Figueroa all finished the game with two hits, LHP Wilfrido Perez and RHP Josh Perrault each threw a scoreless inning of relief in the contest.

The Baysox will meet the curve for the final game of the five-game series Monday in Altoona at 7:05 p.m. LHP Bobby Livingston (5-2, 3.97 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Baysox, he will be opposed by RHP Derek Hank1ns (0-1, 4.15 ERA) for the Curve. The Baysox return home Tuesday, June 30, for Belly Buster Bargain Night. The team will also host a fundraiser to benefit the family of Christopher Jones July 1, the team is offering $5 general admission seat tickets through several Crofton businesses with proceeds being donated to the family.
