Connecticut Defenders News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT- For the second consecutive day the Connecticut Defenders claimed victory over New Britain but this time it took a last minute rally to squeeze by 4-3 Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.
In a tied ballgame in the eighth, CF-Mike Mooney pulled out a squeeze bunt to score RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve who doubled to leadoff the inning for the game winning run and lock in another series win for the Defenders.
Connecticut received another solid pitching performance from RHP-Daryl Maday. The offense got off to a slow start but delivered in the fifth to give the Defenders a 1-0 lead as 2B-Sharlon Schoop drove in C-Tyler LaTorre with an infield RBI single.
The Defenders added a pair of runs in the sixth. Martinez-Esteve pulled a solo homer (4) over the left centerfield wall. DH-Adam Witter doubled and LaTorre drove him in with an RBI single as Connecticut built a 3-0 cushion.
In the bottom of the sixth, New Britain's offense woke up driving Maday from the game. Maday gave up a leadoff double to RF-Rene Tosoni, walked DH-Erik Lis and rendered an RBI single to 3B-Juan Portes before leaving with 5.1 innings of work, allowing six hits, three runs two earned, walked a pair and fanned one in the no decision. Reliever LHP-Matt Yourkin took over in a bases loaded jam and walked the first batter he faced, trimming the lead to one then pinch hitter Toby Gardenhire sent a base hit to left to tie the game at three but LF-Ramon Castro would induce a 7, 2, 4 double play to keep it that way. Yourkin (4-1) settled down to turn in two scoreless innings of two hit ball, walked one and struck out two in the win.
New Britain would get the potential tying and winning runs aboard in the ninth but LHP-Joe Paterson closed the game with a groundout to 1B-Brett Pill to pick up his eighth save of the season.
Rock Cats' reliever, RHP-Anthony Slama (4-2) suffered the loss giving up just one hit and the game winning run over two innings of work while walking one and striking out a pair.
Connecticut will look for their second series sweep of New Britain tomorrow at 6:35pm from New Britain Stadium as RHP-Brooks McNiven (1-2) takes the hill against RHP-Carlos Gutierrez (1-1).
