Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Burlington Bees (12-13) struggled to drive in base runners and fell 3-to-1 to the Quad Cities River Bandits (14-12). The loss marks the fourth straight time the Bees have lost a game after reaching .500 in the previous contest.
Right-hander Sean Murphy returned to the mound after waiting for the rain to stay away over the past few days. Murphy was scheduled to start on Monday night, but instead waited an extra three days after game three in Lake County was cancelled due to rain and Wednesday's game postponed to Friday. Murphy pitched a gem in his last outing on April 25 in Fort Wayne, which led to the Midwest League declaring Murphy last week's Pitcher of the Week.
Murphy's gave up a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and another in the fourth after a couple doubles from the River Bandits. Murphy pitched a total of 5.2 innings and gave up a total of two earned runs. Murphy (2-2) took the loss despite looking effective and striking out six batters.
The Bees had seven hits and threatened to score a couple times in the game, but the 'timely hit' evaded the Bees' offense. Chih-Fang Pan led the unit and went 3-for-4 with three singles. But the Bees had a couple base running miscues that led to the lack of offensive production.
In the second inning Royce Consigli hit a single up the middle that would have scored Dusty Robinson from second base had he not stumbled rounding third base. Robinson never scored despite leading off the inning with a double. The base running troubles continued when Douglas Landaeta led off the sixth inning with an opposite field single, but was caught stealing second base after a pitch that struck out Consigli.
After Thursday's loss, the Bees trail the River Bandits in the Midwest League Western division standings by one-and-a-half games. The Bees play two more games with the River Bandits Friday night. The doubleheader will feature two seven-inning games to make up for Wednesday's postponement.
