Smith Hits Game Winning Homer in the 10th

(Dayton, OH) - Jordan Smith's opposite field solo homerun in the 10th inning was the difference in a 5-4 Lake County win on Thursday night in Dayton, Ohio. Smith's homer hit off the foul pole, which is 320 feet away down the left field line. The homer was the third of the night for the Captains as they prevailed in extras.

Lake County opened the scoring in the first inning. The Captains used a walk and a pair of fielding errors by the Dragons and that helped push a run across in the opening frame. The score was 1-0 until the bottom of the second inning when the Dragons drew even. Dayton used a single by Juan Silva and also a stolen base by Silva as well to get a runner into scoring position for Junior Arias. Arias promptly singled home Silva and the game was deadlocked at one.

Dayton took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jefery Sierra doubled to lead off the inning and then Juan Perez doubled him to third. Sierra scampered home with the go-ahead run. It was 2-1 Dragons. Alex Monsalve connected on his third homer of the year in the top of the sixth tying things at two.

Robel Garcia hit a two out two run opposite field homerun to left field in the eight inning to push Lake County put in front one more time. In the bottom of the ninth, Dayton tied the ballgame. The Dragons loaded the bases with just one out and were able to push two across to send the game to extra frames tied at four.

The Dragons starting pitcher RHP Radhames Quezada (0-3) did not factor in the decision for Dayton. In fact this game was left up to the bullpen. The loss went to Kyle McMyne (2-2) after he surrendered the homer in the 10th to Smith.

LHP Elvis Araujo (0-4) didn't get a decision for the Captains. Araujo's line was 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Grant Sides entered in relief and retired all the batters he faced in two and a third innings pitched. Jeff Johnson (2-1) got the win for Lake County after getting through the ninth. Cole Cook shut the door for his first save of the season. The Captains have now won two in a row and will go for the sweep in the series finale Friday night.

The Captains continue the road trip on Friday Night in Dayton. Lake County will send RHP Joe Colon (1-3, 5.09) to the mound against RHP Daniel Tuttle (1-0, 1.54) for the Dragons. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm. This is Lake County's first trip to Dayton n the 2012 season.
