South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
SOUTH BEND - The South Bend Silver Hawks escaped a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the ninth inning Thursday and held on to defeat the Bowling Green Hot Rods 5-3 in front of 1,677 fans at Coveleski Stadium. With the win, the Silver Hawks (16-11) are now back in sole possession of second place in the Eastern Division.
Trailing 5-3 entering the ninth inning the Hot Rods loaded the bases on a walk from Taylor Motter and a pair of base hits from Tyler Goedell and Ryan Brett. Right-hander Matt Sample proceeded to strikeout Drew Vettleson and then got Todd Glaesmann to hit a ground ball to Josh Parr resulting in a 6-3 game- ending double play. Sample did not allow a run over the final two innings and earned his first save this season.
First-rounder Archie Bradley (4-1) earned the win for South Bend allowing just one earned run on one hit over five innings. Lefty Felipe Rivero (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Hot Rods, surrendering three earned runs on five hits over 4.1 innings.
Trailing 1-0, the Hawks took the lead with a two-run fourth inning. Gerson Montilla started things with an RBI double and Tom Belza completed the rally with a sacrifice fly. The Silver Hawks added three more runs in the fifth inning on two hits and a pair of errors. Marc Bourgeois capped off the inning with an RBI base hit.
