Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored three runs in the seventh inning and forced the Kane County Cougars to strand two runners in the ninth inning for a 4-3 win Thursday night in Geneva. The win evens the three-game series and moves the Chiefs to 11-16 on the season with five games left on a season-long 13-game roadtrip.
Kane County took the lead in the first inning thanks to a Chiefs miscue. Marco Hernandez committed a throwing error on the first play of the game and Justin Trapp stole second. Danny Mateo reached on an infield single that hit Chiefs' pitcher Jose Rosario in the foot to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, Lane Adams drove home Trapp with a single to center and Orlando Calixte singled to load the bases. Rosario bounced back to strikeout Murray Watts before Henry Moreno bounced out to end the inning with the Cougars on top 1-0.
Paul Hoilman led off the Chiefs half of the second with a single to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. He moved to second a groundout and went to third on a single by Oliver Zapata. A wild pitch by Edwin Carl scored Hoilman to tie the game before the Cougars got out of the inning.
The game stayed tied 1-1 into the bottom of the fourth. Watts drew a lead off walk and advanced to third on a double by Henry Moreno. Tim Ferguson singled to center and Watts scored but Taiwan Easterling threw a strike to the plate to nail Moreno for the second out of the inning. Rosario got the next two batters to ground out as the Chiefs trailed 2-1.
Kane County knocked Rosario from the game and extended their lead in the sixth. With one out, Watts reached on an error by Hoilman at first and moved to third on a double by Moreno. Ferguson doubled to left and Watts scored but Moreno didn't read the ball well off the bat and had to be held at third. After striking out Jin-Ho Shin, Rosario departed for Austin Reed. Reed froze Trapp with a third strike breaking ball to end the inning with the Chiefs down 3-1.
Peoria took the lead for good in the seventh thanks to some shaky defense from the Cougars. Rafael Lopez led off with a double and Zapata beat out a bunt to put runners on the corners. Yaniel Cabezas grounded to short but Calixte threw well wide of second and into the Cougars bullpen allowing both Lopez and Zapata to score and tie the game. The throw back from the outfield airmailed the catcher and Cabezas moved to third with the go-ahead run. Hernandez took advantage with a single to left to give the Chiefs a 4-3 lead.
Reed pitched around a one-out single in the seventh and a one-out double in the eighth before giving way to Jeff Lorick. Lorick allowed two infield singles in the ninth with a sacrifice bunt between the hits to put runners on the corners with one out. He blew away Adams with a fastball before Calixte bounced to third and Darvill's high throw was caught by Hoilman to save the game.
Rosario allowed three runs, one earned, on 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two. Reed (1-2) allowed two hits over 2 1/3 shutout innings while striking out three and stranding two inherited runners. Lorick earned his third save in four changes this season with one shutout inning, one strikeout and two hits allowed.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Pin-Chieh Chen (LF) - Chen singled twice, doubled, stole a base and sacrificed on Thursday night. He picked up his first three-hit game of the season and fourth stolen base.
