For the second straight game, the Corpus Christi Rayz and Youngstown Steelhounds, battled through an overtime thriller. And for the second straight game, the Hounds tip-toed past the Rayz with a shootout win. Youngstown topped Corpus Christi 2-1 Friday night from the Chevrolet Center for their second straight win, but Corpus Christi picked up a point to extend their undefeated streak to five games. Brent Zelenewich led the way for Corpus Christi, making 46 saves on 47 shots, but Brian Patterson scored his second consecutive game winning goal in the shootout to lift the Hounds. The Rayz and Hounds will conclude their three-game set Saturday night.

The Hounds scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. While on a power play, Jeff Christian took a centering feed from Chris Richards and beat Rayz netminder Brent Zelenewich from the bottom of the slot for his seventh goal of the year. The Rayz had a chance to tally in the first period, but Jason Baird clanked a rebound shot off the crossbar on a Rayz power play. The Hounds outshot the Rayz 11-6 in the opening period.

Despite being shorthanded five times in the second period, and facing a barrage of Steelhounds shots, the Rayz turned in a great special teams period. Corpus Christi killed off five power plays in the second period and scored the only goal of the frame. Rookie defenseman Jason Lepine blistered a one-timer past David Currie at 18:06 of the period for a power play goal. The goal was assisted by Justin Quenneville and Jason Baird and tied the game at 1-1. The Hounds outshot the Rayz 20-4 in the period, but the game entered the third period tied.

In the third period, both teams had special teams opportunities, but neither team tallied and regulation closed with the clubs tied at one. The Hounds outshot the Rayz 10-8 in the period. After a scoreless period, the Rayz hopped to an early lead in the shootout scoring on their first shot from Jason Baird. Justin Quenneville also scored in the shootout for Corpus Christi. Zelenewich stopped the first two Youngstown shooters, but the Hounds scored on the back three with Patterson finally ending it as the final shooter.

The Rayz took their second overtime loss of the season and in as many games, but upped their point total to 16 with a record of 7-6-2. The Steelhounds improved their record to 8-3-3 with their second straight shootout win. Zelenewich took the shootout loss and moved to 2-2-1, while Currie won his third of the year improving to 3-3-2. Youngstown outshot Corpus Christi 47-18. Power plays were a factor throughout the night as the clubs combined for a Rayz season-high 22 opportunities. Corpus Christi's penalty killing was outstanding, holding the Hounds to 1-12. Corpus Christi went 1-10 on the man advantage.
