Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Patrick Gaul's wrist shot from the left face-off dot at 53 seconds of overtime gave the visiting South Carolina Stingrays a 4-3 victory over the Alaska Aces in a Monday night exhibition game at the Sullivan Arena.
The Stingrays opened a 3-1 third period lead before the Aces stormed back to tie it in regulation.
The scoring opened at 18:01 of the first period as former Aces winger Olivier Archambault scored the first of his two goals.
Aces defenseman Ryan Trenz zipped a wrist shot from the slot at 11:54 of the second period to tie the game at one. Trenz' goal was unassisted.
Archambault struck again at 16:50 of the second as he steered in a rebound of a shot by Gaul and through the legs of Aces netminder Lukas Hafner.
At 3:15 of the third period, Rob Flick converted a wrist shot off the crisp passes of Joe Devin and Archambault in a 5 on 3 power play to make it 3-1 South Carolina.
The Aces busted back into the game on their own 5 on 3 power play goal by Tim Coffman at 15:10. Assists went to Vladimir Nikiforov and Peter Sivak. Collin Valcourt did a great job of screening Stingrays goalie Parker Milner on the play.
Then Ben Lake tied the game at 3 at 17:03, whacking in his own rebound after assists from Charlie Sampair and Andrew Miller.
In the overtime period, the Aces had first crack at Milner but Sivak's shot was knocked away. Archambault collected a puck just inside the Aces blueline and found Gaul in the left face-off circle. Gaul's shot eluded Hafner between the stick and post to give SC the win.
Alaska outshot South Carolina 38-32 for the game. Milner had 35 saves, Hafner 28.
The two teams will play again Tuesday night at 7:15 at the Sullivan Arena.
