Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - The Mavericks (26-12) continued their home run onslaught against the Visalia Rawhide (23-14), sweeping the four-game series with a three home run effort by the final of 4-3 on Monday afternoon at Rawhide Ballpark.
Visalia, trailing 4-3 in the ninth, put the tying runner on base in the form of LF Grant Heyman, who walked. A passed ball moved him to second base. C Oscar Hernandez hit a single up the middle against LHP Joe Filomeno (SV 3), Heyman rounded third and headed for home, CF Jose Cardona fielded the ball and threw it home to C David Lyon, who applied the tag to the back of the sliding Heyman to end the ballgame.
In the top of the ninth, with Visalia clinging to a 3-2 lead, RHP Luis Ramirez (6-1, 3.86) came on to close out the ballgame. After he hit 1B Juremi Profar, Lyon, who was just activated from the disabled list today, hit a two-run home run over the right field wall, giving the Mavericks the 4-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the ninth.
2B Travis Demeritte, the California League leader in home runs, was the only blemish on starter RHP Taylor Clarke's line this afternoon, homering twice in the Mavericks win. He hit solo shots in the first and the sixth innings to account for all the High Desert offense up until that point.
Trailing 1-0 against Mavericks RHP Ariel Jurado, SS Domingo Leyba connected for his third home run of the season. Leyba also hit one into the pasture in right field for a 2-1 Visalia lead, which at the time, was the first Rawhide lead of the series.
Demeritte's second home run tied the game after six. Clarke pitched six innings and allowed two runs (earned) on six hits, he didn't walk a batter and he struck out five. Clarke did not factor in the decision.
Jurado went five innings for the Mavericks, allowing two runs (earned) on four hits, he didn't walk anyone and he struck out five; not factoring in the decision either.
Visalia claimed the 3-2 lead in the seventh inning against RHP Chris Dula when Heyman singled and moved to second when Hernandez walked. RF Victor Reyes knocked in Heyman with an RBI single for the advantage.
RHP Scott Williams (1-1, 7.71) pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings in relief to earn the win, walking one and striking out one before Filomeno came on for the save.
Visalia has now lost seven of ten and they went just 1-6 over their seven game homestand.
The Rawhide jump on the bus to open up a three game series against the Modesto Nuts (15-21) tomorrow night at John Thurman Field starting at 7:05 p.m. Visalia will throw RHP Lucas Irvine (2-0, 3.57) against RHP Parker French (2-0, 0.93) for the Nuts.
