Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - JetHawks pitcher Matt Bower has been named the California League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 9-15, the league announced Monday.
Bower struck out 10 batters over 5.0 scoreless innings in his Cal League debut on Saturday. He allowed just one hit and issued two walks in Lancaster's 5-1 victory over Lake Elsinore. His performance marked the first 10-plus-strikeout game for a JetHawk since right-hander Francis Martes on August 4, 2015.
Bower, a native of Federal Way, Wash. and former Washington St. Cougar, was promoted to Lancaster from Quad Cities on Friday. He was 1-0 with a 2.29 ERA in five games (three starts) in the Midwest League. The left-hander had struck 28 batters over 19.2 innings and was holding opponents to a .208 batting average.
The weekly honor is the first awarded to a Lancaster pitcher since Martes earned Pitcher of the Week for his work from August 17-23, 2015.
Evan Grills, who was promoted to Double-A Corpus Christi to open a spot for Bower on the Lancaster roster, earned Texas League Pitcher of the Week for his debut performance, a seven-inning complete game shutout.
Bower's next scheduled start is set for Friday at High Desert.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
