Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers (11-26) got strong pitching and a big day at the plate from Michael Strentz to down Rancho Cucamonga 7-1 on Sunday at San Manuel Stadium. The win snapped a number of skids that that the Sixers were mired in. From an immediate standpoint, the victory ended the Sixers' five-game losing streak. It also halted the 66ers' losing streak against the Quakes that had reached back to last July and had run itself to 15 consecutive losses.
Alex Klonowski (2-6) pitched very well for the Sixers and earned the win. The righty fed the Rancho Cucamonga (25-12) a varied diet of sinkers, sliders, change-ups, slow curves and (for the first time this season) knuckleballs en-route to six innings of one run work on four hits with two walks and five Ks. The lone run came on Joey Curletta's sixth inning solo homer.
Dodgers' southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu made an injury rehab start for the Quakes; it was his first start since the 2014 NLDS and his first minor league appearance ever. Ryu gave up a first inning leadoff single to Tim Arakawa and then retired the next six batters in a row with two Ks in his short stint. The single extended Arakawa's Cal League best hit streak to 21 games. The Sixers did their damage against the Quakes bullpen. After two quick outs in the fourth, RC reliever Felipe Gonzalez (0-1) walked back-to-back batters and then surrendered a booming homer to dead-center off the bat of Strentz. It was the Univ. of Louisiana-Lafayette alum's first dinger of the year. The Sixers added two more runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Ayendy Perez and Caleb Adams. IE capped the scoring in the eighth when Strentz tagged a RBI double and Zach Houchin's single knocked him in to make it 7-1. Strentz finished 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Ronnie Muck and Eduardo Paredes combined to toss three scoreless frames in relief of Klonowski surrendering two hits and a walk while fanning four. The Sixers were 5-for-8 with runners in scoring position while the Quakes were 0-5.
The series concludes at 3:00 pm on Monday at San Manuel Stadium. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
