
Rascals Snap Six-Game Winning Streak

Sauget, IL - The Rascals (11-8) lost their series-opener with the Gateway Grizzlies (6-14) 12-2 on Friday, June 5 at GCS Ballpark. The Rascals snapped their season-best six-game win streak. RHP Santos Saldivar (L, 0-1) made his professional debut and pitched 3.1 innings. He allowed four hits, three runs, and four walks. He also struck out two batters in his first career start. RHP Chandler Jagodzinski allowed three runs, just one earned, and struck out five batters over 2.2 innings in his season debut. RHP Will Schierholz ceded three unearned runs in 1.0 inning of relief.
Grizzlies starter Max Schonfeld (W, 1-1) pitched 5.2 shutout innings and surrendered eight hits and one walk.
Gateway took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Ben Waltrip hit a one-out single, and Richard Seigel walked. Shawn Payne drove both men in on a two-out double to centerfield.
The Grizzlies added a run in the fourth inning. Seigel walked, Garrett Vail singled, and Madison Beaird walked to load the bases with one out. Ryan Soares then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Seigel from third.
Five hits, a walk, and three errors led to six Grizzlies runs, five unearned, in the bottom of the seventh inning. Beaird hit a bunt single, and 3B Taylor Ard committed a fielding error, allowing Soares to reach base. Rolando Gomez then hit an RBI single to left field. A walk and Ard's second error of the inning allowed another run to score; Ard made three total errors in the game. Seigel drove in another run on an infield single, and Vail knocked in a pair of runs on a hit to center. Bearid followed with a single to right field, and a fielding error by RF Saxon Butler allowed another unearned run to score. Gateway sent 11 men to the plate in the seventh.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Rascals hit back-to-back homeruns for the first time this season. DH Josh Ludy hit a solo homer, his second of the season, with one out. Ard followed with his fifth long ball of the season; he has hit a homerun in each of the last four games.
Ludy entered the game to pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning. He allowed two walks, hit a batter, and surrendered a three-run homer to Waltrip. RHP Josh Silver entered the game with a man on first and no outs. He induced a groundball doubleplay and struck out a batter looking for 1.0 scoreless inning.
The Rascals continue their three-game series against the Gateway Grizzlies on Saturday, June 6 at GCS Ballpark at 7:05 CST.
