Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners were down by five runs in the ninth inning before mounting a late charge that fell just short in a 7-5 loss at home to the Schaumburg Boomers on Thursday night to drop the series two games to one.

There was no score through the first four innings as Brandon Cowan (0-1) and Anthony Gomez (1-3) each tossed up zeroes to keep the other off the board. Schaumburg got two two-out hits in the fifth, however, to take a 2-0 lead that was extended to 3-0 in the sixth on a homer by Steve McQuail.

Southern Illinois then rallied for two in the bottom half. Jerrud Sabourin and Michael Earley got on base with a double and single, and a wild pitch moved them to second and third. With one out, reliever Garrett Bolt could not record a single out, walking Frank Martinez to load the bases before hitting Jon Minucci with a pitch and issuing another free pass to Wendell Fairley. With the score now 3-2, however, Jake Joyce induced a 6-4-3 double play as the Miners left the tying run at third.

It remained 3-2 until the ninth, when the Boomers plated four more runs. Down 7-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Miners managed three runs off of Boomers closer Hideyoshi Otake thanks to four hits, a wild pitch and a balk, with RBIs by Toby DeMello and Sabourin in the inning. With the tying run at first base and two outs, however, Otake got a groundout to first to escape further harm.

Sabourin and Earley each had two hits for the Miners, who will next head on the road to face the Normal CornBelters in a matchup of two teams currently tied for first place in their respective divisions. Reigning Pitcher of the Year Matt Bywater will take the ball for Southern Illinois against Normal's Kevin Brahney at 6:35 p.m. at The Corn Crib.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
