OREM - The two hottest teams in the Pioneer League met head on Wednesday night with Ogden (16-9, 35-28) securing a 5-1 victory over Idaho Falls (18-7, 31-32) in the first game of a crucial two-game series at Lindquist Field.

Making his league-leading 13th start of the season, Jairo Pacheco (6-3) pitched an absolute gem, scattering four hits over six scoreless innings while striking out six batters.

"When you are the starting pitcher, you have to be focused on trying to get out hitters in three or less pitches," Pacheco said. "That is good because you can throw five or six innings."

Idaho Falls put runners on second and third with no outs in the third inning, but Pacheco got a lineout and two groundouts to keep the Chukars off the board.

Ogden took advantage in the home half of the inning. Jimy Perez led off with a single, luckily managed to return to first base safely after he was caught in a rundown, and scored on Faustino Oguisten's 402-foot blast off the scoreboard in left field that gave the Raptors a 2-0 lead. It was Oguisten's first home run of the season.

Pacheco continued to pitch strong and Ogden put the game out of reach in the sixth inning. Jake Henson led off with a single and Matt Jones and Alex Santana followed with back-to-back doubles, Santana's driving in Henson. Perez later walked to load the bases and drive Carter Hope (0-3) from the game. Kelvin Ramos then brought Jones home on a deep sacrifice fly against reliever Drew Milligan. Oguisten then picked up his third run batted in with a double. Along with a single in the fifth inning, Oguisten finished 3-for-3 with a single, double, and home run. The 9-hitter was just a triple shy of the cycle, but came two slots short of his fourth at-bat to even make the attempt.

Josh Staumont struck out five straight Raptors in the seventh and eighth innings, but MJ Villegas and Andrew Istler kept the shutout in tact heading into the ninth inning. Kyle Pollock led off with a solo home run off of Marcus Crescentini, but Brawlun Gomez struck out for the third time and Jeckson Flores grounded into a game-ending double play.

With the 5-1 win, Ogden moves to within two games of Idaho Falls for first place in the second half of the Pioneer League South Division standings. The two teams square off again on Thursday night at Lindquist Field with Adam Bray (1-1, 3.38) starting for Ogden and Derek Gordon (2-3, 3.79) for Idaho Falls.

"We are close to Idaho Falls and every game with them is going to be really hard and really close," Pacheco said.

First pitch is again slated for 6:30pm MT.
