Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
Both the Idaho Falls Chukars and the Ogden Raptors came out swinging Saturday night with each team scoring five runs in the first inning, but it was the Raptors who kept their foot on the gas offensively in a 10-5 Chukars loss in front of 3,122 fans at Melaleuca Field.
For the third straight game the Chukars offense looked good early, but could only muster seven total base runners after the first inning. The Raptors bats, or more accurately their legs, had no such problem however, as the lizards stole a season high seven bases while scoring five unanswered runs in the win.
The Raptors started the ballgame against Chukars starter Zeb Sneed with a groundout by Darnell Sweeney, but then rattled off six consecutive singles while scoring their runs. The Chukars meanwhile started their first inning against Carlos Frias with four straight hits including a single from Ethan Chapman, a double from Nick Cuckovich, a 2-RBI base knock from Elier Hernandez, and a double from Rainier Bello. Catcher Jin-Ho Shin kept the scoring going with an RBI sacrifice fly to right and was followed by an RBI double from Parker Morin and an RBI base hit from Ysmelin Alcantara to tie the game at 5-5.
Miraculously, both starting pitchers would settle down, keeping the game tied at 5-5 through the fourth. The Idaho Falls bullpen entered the game in the fifth inning however, and the reawakened Raptors struck for two runs, one earned, on three this to take a 7-5 lead.
Ogden would keep the pressure on throughout the game as well, plating single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to put the game out of reach for the Chukars. The Raptors had multiple stolen bases in three innings too, as the Chukars relief staff failed to keep the runners at bay.
Morin led the Chukars potent then suddenly moribund attack, going 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Morin now has three straight multi-hit games and three straight games with an extra base hit and an RBI.
Frias (1-1) bounced back from his rough start to earn the win for the Raptors, with the righty allowing five runs on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched. Chukars reliever Kevin Allen (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits over his two innings of work.
The Chukars (6-7) have now lost three straight and drop below .500 for the first time this season. The Raptors, meanwhile, continue their hot start to the season and improve to 10-3, four games ahead of the second place Greybirds.
The two clubs will match up again Sunday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
