Rapidz drop opening series

(OTTAWA) May 25, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz hosted the New Jersey Jackals for their final game of their opening homestand at Rapidz Stadium. The final score of the game was 15-6 in favour of the New Jersey Jackals, who took the series three games to one. Today's game featured an outpouring of offense from both team, as the Jackals produced 16 hits while the Rapidz managed 11. The attendance for today's game was 3,398 for a total of 12,418 over the opening four game weekend.

Today's starting match-up featured Greg Bunn for the Ottawa Rapidz and Isaac Pavlik for the New Jersey Jackals. Bunn (0-1) who was credited with the loss suffered with control issues at times and went 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while striking out one and walking seven. Pavlik (1-0), earned the victory for the Jackals, even if he allowed five earned runs and nine hits in five innings of work.

With the first two batters for the Jackals on base, Scott White hit an RBI single to score the Jackals first run of the game. With the bases loaded, Bunn surrendered consecutive walks to both Andrew Larsen and Craig Maddox which forced home two runs to increase the lead for the Jackals to 4-0.

Jared Lemieux answered to start the bottom of the first with a leadoff double for the Rapidz. With runners at the corners with no out, Jabe Bergeron then hit into a 6,4,3 double play, scoring Lemieux from third to reduce the Jackals lead to 4-1.

With two men on board in the third, Kyle Geiger was credited with a passed ball that scored a run, which finished the afternoon for Bunn. Cibney Bello entered the game for the Rapidz, and with the bases loaded Marcus Sanders hit a two-out double into left field which cleared the bases and increase the Jackals lead to 8-1 after three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth Pete Pirman, in his first game with the Rapidz, hit a two-out single into centre field to cash in the runners and reduce the Jackals lead to 8-3.

Kyle Geiger hit the franchise's first home run for the Ottawa Rapidz to cut the lead to 8-4. With two out Bergeron hit an RBI triple into right centre field to score Jose de los Santos from first who singled to reduce the lead to 8-5.

The Jackals added more runs in the sixth inning when Ramon Nivar and Francisco Leandro both delivered RBI doubles to increase the Jackals lead to 11-5. Scott White then hit a two-run home run to give the Jackals a 13-5 lead. After Bello was replaced by Karl Mejlholm, Zach Smithlin hit his second double of the game to finish the scoring for the Jackals in the sixth, as they increased their lead to 14-5.

The Jackals added another run in the top of the seventh. After Chris Kelly and Leandro hit singles, Andrew Larsen hit a RBI double down the right field line to score Kelly, increasing the Jackals lead by ten to make the score 15-5.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Bergeron took the Jackals pitcher deep to left field for the Rapidz second home run of the game. This completed the scoring for the game which ended 15-6 in favour of the Jackals.

The Rapidz start their second series Monday, May 26 on the road against the Atlantic City Surf. The next home game is Tuesday, June 3rd at 7:05 pm against the Nashua Pride.
