New Jersey Jackals News Release

Ottawa, ON - The New Jersey Jackals struck early and often on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Ottawa Rapidz 15-6 to take the season-opening series three games to one.

The Jackals opened the game with a four-run top of the first as Ottawa starter Greg Bunn walked three in the inning, including two with the bases loaded. The Rapidz pushed one across in the bottom of the inning to cut the Jackals lead to 4-1 at the end of one.

In the top of the third inning, New Jersey posted four more with the help of three more free passes. Center fielder Zach Smithlin's RBI single was followed by a bases loaded three-run double by second baseman Marcus Sanders, making the score 8-1 in favor of New Jersey.

After two Ottawa runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth made it an 8-5 game, New Jersey struck for six runs in the top of the sixth inning to blow the game open. The Jackals sent eleven batters to the plate in the inning, which included RBI doubles by shortstop Ramon Nivar and left fielder Francisco Leandro, and a two-run home run off the bat of third baseman Scott White. The score was 14-5 after six innings.

The teams exchanged runs in the seventh inning to close off the scoring as the Jackals came away with the nine-run victory.

Isaac Pavlik (1-0) allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings of work but earned the win thanks to New Jersey's offensive output. Greg Bunn (0-1) was removed from the game with two outs in the third inning after walking six batters and allowing seven earned runs.

New Jersey travels to Quebec to face off with the Capitales in a three-game series beginning tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Right hander Mike Vicaro takes the hill for the Jackals. Tune in to the live webcast on www.jackals.com beginning at 7:00 p.m.
