Ottawa, ON - Jackals starter Juan Done struggled early, loading the bases in the first inning before working out of the jam unscathed. The right hander went on to pitch six shutout innings and earn the win as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Ottawa Rapidz 6-1 on Saturday night at Ottawa Stadium.

Done (1-0) allowed a first inning double by Rapidz center fielder Jared Lemieux to lead off the bottom of the first. He didn't allow another hit until a sixth inning single by second baseman Joes De Los Santos.

The Jackals opened up the scoring in the top of the second. Catcher Matt Lauderdale led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single by right fielder Andrew Larsen that fell between three fielders down the right field line. The 1-0 New Jersey lead held until the top of the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, Jackals designated hitter Casey Gordon drew a one out walk. After a Zach Smithlin ground out and a passed ball by Rapidz catcher Maxime Bouchard advanced Gordon to third, second baseman Marcus Sanders stroked a run-scoring double to extend the lead to 2-0.

New Jersey took a 3-0 in the top of the sixth when third baseman Chris Kelly led off with a double and scored two batters later when first baseman Scott White lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

The Jackals padded their lead with two more runs in the seventh. Gordon started off the frame with a walk. The next batter, Smithlin, laid down a bunt which he beat out before Ottawa pitcher Noel Baca threw the ball wide of first, allowing Gordon to advance to third. Sanders then flew out to center, scoring Gordon to extend the Jackals' lead to 4-0. Following a pop out by shortstop Ramon Nivar, Smithlin stole second and scored on a base knock by Kelly to make it 5-0.

Ottawa broke the shutout in the bottom of the eighth as Jackals reliever Joe D'Alessandro loaded the bases with one out. Ted Serro came on in relief and got Bouchard to ground to second, but first baseman Jabe Bergeron scored from third on the sacrifice to cut the Jackals lead to 5-1.

Smithlin singled to start the top of the ninth and scored on an RBI single by Lauderdale to complete the scoring, extending the Jackals' lead to 6-1.

In a non-save situation, lefty Rusty Tucker struck out two batters in his season debut as he pitched a perfect ninth inning. Reliever Brandon Martin also made his first appearance in 2008, allowing one hit while fanning two in a scoreless seventh.

On offense, Sanders continued his torrid pace with a 2-4 performance that included a double and two RBIs. The second baseman is now 6-10 on the young season. Lauderdale and Larsen each drove in runs while collecting two hits apiece.

New Jersey looks to win the four game series tomorrow when the teams square off at 1:05 p.m. Mike Vicaro takes the mound for the Jackals at Ottawa Stadium against the Rapidz' Greg Bunn. Tune in to the live webcast at www.jackals.com beginning at 1:00 p.m.
