Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The New York Rangers of the National Hockey League and affiliate of the Checkers, reassigned defenseman Michael Busto to Charlotte.
Busto, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, hails from Burnaby, British Columbia and played the last six seasons in the Western Hockey League. While playing for the Kootenay Ice last year, Busto led his team in goals, assists and points for a defenseman, garnering 20 goals, 43 assists for 63 points in 70 games. Busto participated in both the Rangers and Hartford Wolf Pack (American Hockey League) training camps before being reassigned to the Checkers.
"Michael is a very steady, firm and in control defenseman," said Rangers head coach, Tom Renney. "He doesn't get too rattled or worked up. He plays with the poise that you need back there and makes simple, smart decisions. He's got some bite and sandpaper to his game, too, where he finishes his checks and plays you hard down low. We like that, and we see this as a good signing for a young free agent player who will probably take a few years until he gets to the point where he is challenging for an NHL job, but we believe we've got that in him."
General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, also announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forward Ryan Murphy.
Murphy, drafted by the Los Angeles Kings (NHL) in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, was born in Rumson, NJ. He played the last three seasons with the Manchester Monarchs (AHL) and appeared in 29 games last season picking up five goals and five assists for 10 points. The 5-foot-11, 190 pound winger says he is happy for the opportunity to don a Checkers sweater, "I have heard really good things about the Checkers. I know it's an organization that wants to move its players up the ranks. I am excited for the chance play in Charlotte and hopefully, go back to the AHL."
The Checkers enter their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL on Oct. 19 against the Columbia Inferno. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399. The Checkers are accepting deposits on all ticket packages. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
