Randolph Raps Two Hits in 4-1 Loss

May 31, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL1) - Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cornelius Randolph and Deivi Grullon each knocked two hits on Tuesday, but the Threshers were limited to just a ninth-inning run in suffering a 4-1 loss to the Florida Fire Frogs in the series opener at Spectrum Field.

Clearwater (28-24) remains just one game behind the first-place Dunedin Blue Jays in the Florida State League North, with 18 games left to play in the first half.

Cole Irvin (3-6) took the loss despite a solid performance. The lefty held the Fire Frogs to just two runs on five hits and one walk across six innings of work. He recorded five strikeouts, and exited after 85 pitches, 53 of which were strikes.

The Fire Frogs jumped ahead in the third inning, after opening the frame with a double from Ray-Patrick Didder and a single by Alejandro Salazar .

Anfernee Seymour followed with a sacrifice fly to center to put the Fire Frogs (22-30) on the board.

Florida added its second run against Irvin in the sixth inning.

After Seymour singled to lead off, Matt Gonzalez dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance him into scoring position. Tyler Neslony followed with an infield hit, and Austin Riley brought home Seymour with a sac fly to center to make it 2-0.

The Threshers put runners on base in every inning except the second, but Ricardo Sanchez (3-5) danced around three singles and two walks to toss five shutout frames. Chase Johnson-Mullins followed with two scoreless innings in relief.

Herlis Rodriguez worked a one-out walk in the eighth inning, and Drew Stankiewiecz grounded what appeared to be a single through the right side, which would have put runners at the corners with just one out. Rodriguez had crossed in front of second baseman Alay Lago, who moved in to attempt to field the bounding ball off the bat of Stankiewicz.

On appeal from the Fire Frogs, the umpires ruled interference on Rodriguez. He was thus called out, and instead of having the tying run on base, the Threshers were left with two outs and a runner at first. Threshers manager Shawn Williams was subsequently ejected for arguing the interference call.

After Florida put up a pair against reliever Matt Hockenberry in the ninth, Clearwater managed to crack the scoreboard against Devan Watts . Grullon doubled to left-center, and with one out Rodriguez sent one to the warning track in right for a double as Grullon held at third. Stankiewicz then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Grullon with the Threshers' lone run.

Clearwater will look to even up the four-game set on Wednesday with a noon first pitch in game two. Alberto Tirado (3-3) takes the hill against Touki Toussaint (1-6), and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 11:45 a.m.
