Amburgey Homers in 5-4 Loss to Charlotte
May 31, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL1) - Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - After grabbing three early runs, the Tampa Yankees (27-26) could not hold the lead as the Charlotte Stone Crabs (24-26) went on even the series with a 5-4 win on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The T-Yanks used a two-out rally in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Tito Polo blasted a triple to the wall in right-centerfield and Chris Gittens drew a walk before both scored on a three-run homerun by Trey Amburgey . The 22-year-old's team-leading sixth blast hit off the batter's eye in dead-centerfield.
Albert Abreu made the start for Tampa and cruised through the first two innings, retiring the first six batters he faced, before finding trouble in the top of the third.
David Olmedo-Barrera lined a leadoff triple into right-centerfield and scored on a double into left by Thomas Milone . Two batters later, Milone scored on an RBI single into right by Jake Cronenworth .
The Charlotte bats stayed hot in the fourth with back-to-back doubles by David Rodriguez and Dalton Kelly . One out later, the Stone Crabs grabbed the lead when Jim Haley lined an RBI double into the right field corner. Milone followed with an RBI single into left, giving Charlotte a 5-3 advantage.
After Amburgey's homer, Charlotte starter Travis Ott (W, 1-0) retired nine-straight batters. The southpaw held the Yankees to four earned runs on two hits and five walks in five innings, striking out four while throwing 49 of 89 pitches for strikes.
Abreu (L, 0-3) allowed five earned runs on seven hits in five innings, walking one while striking out three. The right-hander threw 50 of 69 pitches for strikes.
Tampa cut the deficit in half with a run in the sixth. Polo drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a base hit to right by Nick Solak . A wild pitch by Charlotte reliever RHP Joe Serrapica allowed Polo to score.
LHP Ian Clarkin relieved Abreu in the sixth and worked four scoreless frames, scattering four hits while striking out five.
RHP Drew Smith (SV, 3) worked the eighth and ninth, scattering a walk and a single while striking out three and closing the game for Charlotte.
Solak (2-for-3, BB) had the lone multi-hit game for Tampa, reaching base three times. Amburgey (1-for-4, HR, 3RBI, R) leads the team with 25 RBI.
The series continues on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with RHP Brody Koerner (0-0, 0.00 ERA) scheduled to face RHP Taylor Hawkins (1-3, 6.43 ERA). On Thirsty Thursdays, fans can enjoy 16 oz.
