Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - A late rally wasn't enough for the Quakes on Wednesday night, as they opened their home stand at LoanMart Field with a loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm, 5-3.

Johan Mieses blasted a two-run homer in the eighth, but the Rancho offense couldn't muster the tying runs off Colby Blueberg in the ninth, as the Quakes dropped their second straight overall, falling back into a first-place tie with High Desert, who beat Modesto on Wednesday night.

Trailing 5-1 in the eighth, Mieses ripped his eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot with Devan Ahart aboard, making it a 5-3 game against Lake Elsinore reliever Taylor Cox.

In the ninth, Rancho threatened, as Garrett Kennedy singled and Erick Mejia walked to open the frame against Blueberg. After a sacrifice bunt by Pin-Chieh Chen, Blueberg walked Ahart to load the bases, but rebounded to strike out Matt Beaty and retire Mieses to end it and record his ninth save of the year.

Quakes' starter Tommy Bergjans (2-5) struggled to keep the ball in the ballpark on Wednesday, as he allowed a solo homer in the first to Josh Van Meter and a three-run shot to Franmil Reyes, who gave Lake Elsinore a 4-1 lead.

Storm starter Walker Lockett (1-1) was strong in earning his first Cal League win, as he allowed just one run on six hits over seven innings of work.

Rancho (32-21) will look to get back on track on Thursday, sending Josh Sborz (4-2) to the mound against Lake Elsinore right-hander Chris Huffman (4-1) at 7:05pm.

Thursday is another Thirsty Thursday, presented by Green-Lite Windows and Doors, as fans will enjoy $2 Pepsi products, $3 16-oz domestic drafts and $4 premium 16-oz drafts, wine, champagne and margaritas. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
