SAN JOSE, CA - The Visalia Rawhide used back-to-back two-run innings in the fifth and sixth to post a 4-2 series-opening victory over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. The loss dropped San Jose (31-21) to two games behind the Rawhide (33-19) for first place in the first half North Division race.

Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4) singled twice to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. San Jose knocked out six hits and scored twice over the first two innings, but managed just two hits over the final seven frames.

The Giants took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as three singles against Rawhide starter Emilio Vargas produced a run. Ronnie Jebavy started the frame with a single before C.J Hinojosa's one-out infield single put runners on first and second. After Chris Shaw flied out, Jonah Arenado grounded a single into right plating Jebavy with the first run of the contest.

San Jose then pushed across another run in the second to extend their lead. Three consecutive singles from Carbonell, Ty Ross and Brandon Bednar to start the inning loaded the bases with none out. Jebavy then lifted a sacrifice fly to center scoring Carbonell for a 2-0 advantage. The Giants had an opportunity to add to their lead as Steven Duggar then walked to load the bases again, but Hinojosa flied out to shallow center and Shaw also flied out to end the inning.

Jose Reyes made the spot start on the mound for San Jose and began his evening with four scoreless innings. Reyes pitched around a one-out single in the first and then used double plays in the second and third innings to work out of jams. In the fourth, Marty Herum led off with a single, but was stranded when the next three hitters were retired.

The Rawhide though finally broke through in the top of the fifth taking advantage of a Giants error to score twice. The inning began with a single from Dawel Lugo before Oscar Hernandez was hit by a pitch. Jose Morel was then summoned from the bullpen to replace Reyes. Colin Bray was up next and he dropped down a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners to second and third. Morel then looked as if he would get out of the inning with no runs coming across. Victor Reyes followed with a shallow fly out to left before Domingo Leyba hit a routine grounder to third. However on the grounder, San Jose third baseman Jose Vizcaino, Jr. threw the ball away to first for an error allowing both Lugo and Hernandez to score tying the game 2-2.

Visalia then plated two more runs in the sixth to take their first lead of the game. Morel quickly retired the first two batters of the inning before running into trouble. Stryker Trahan blasted a double off the fence in straightaway center to keep the inning alive for the Rawhide. Lugo then singled to left plating Trahan to give Visalia a 3-2 lead. After Lugo stole second and Hernandez walked, Bray blooped a single down the left field line scoring another run to make it 4-2.

Meanwhile, 13 consecutive Giants hitters were retired by Rawhide pitching from the second through the sixth innings. Carbonell singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but was stranded when the next batter, Ross, struck out.

In the seventh, Duggar singled with two outs, but Hinojosa struck out on three pitches to end the inning. San Jose was then retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth. In the ninth, still trailing by two runs, Bednar drew a two-out walk bringing the potential tying run to the plate, but Jebavy popped out to third to finish the game.

Gabriel Moya (1-0) earned the win out of the Visalia bullpen after tossing scoreless fifth and sixth innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out one. Jared Miller (1 1/3 IP), Luis Ramirez (2/3 IP) and Bud Jeter (1 IP) then combined on three scoreless innings of relief to finish the game. Jeter picked-up his fifth save of the season.

Morel (1-2) was saddled with the loss out of the Giants bullpen. The right-hander allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits over four innings of long relief. Reyes was charged with two runs (both unearned) in four-plus innings to start the game. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out three.
